Mrs. Carter’s face twisted in anger.
“Son, I don’t mind you dating whoever you want.”
“But marriage? That’s a different story. How could you marry someone like her?!”
“And what kind of person am I?” I shot back, a cold smile forming on my lips.
“Your son was the one who got down on his knees and begged me to marry him.”
“He didn’t even bother with an engagement ring or anything!”
“And he made me sign a prenup before the ink was dry.”
“I’ve done nothing wrong–I’ve never once betrayed your son!”
-Sure, I wasn’t some rich heiress, but I didn’t grow up lacking anything either. I was
my parents‘ only daughter, and they made sure I was well taken care of.
When your son wanted to marry me, my parents didn’t ask for anything
extravagant.
They just wanted to help us get started, offering to contribute $5,000 toward our
future together.
They were even going to add an extra $5,000 so we could build our life as a couple.
But Alexander said taking financial help from my family was like accepting
charity.

“When I married your son, I had no idea he came from a wealthy family.”
“I stuck by him when times were tough–how exactly did I wrong him?” I demanded.
Mrs. Carter’s face flushed with anger.
“How dare you talk back to me like this?!”
“It’s clear you’re from a low–class family. No wonder you don’t have any manners!”
“I will never accept you as my daughter–in–law!”
“How could someone like you even think you deserve my son?”

Mr. Carter interrupted before she could continue,
“That’s enough. They’re already married. What’s the point of arguing now?”
But I smiled coolly, “Who says it’s too late?”

“When I married Alexander, I had no clue he was the heir to a billion–dollar
fortune.”
I glanced at Alexander, who looked stunned and pathetic, and felt nothing but
disgust.
“This whole marriage was a mistake from the start. We should end it now before it
gets any worse.”
Alexander didn’t seem to understand what I meant.
He scowled,
“You’ve met my family, and now you’ve caused this whole scene–what more do
you
want?”
“Everyone here knows you’re Mrs. Carter. Isn’t that enough for you?”
“What I want is none of your business.” I had come prepared for this.
I pulled out the divorce papers and tossed them in front of him.
“Since everyone’s here, let’s make it official”

“Let’s end this on good terms, Alexander. Sign the divorce agreement, and in a few
days, we’ll finalize it in court.”
My voice dripped with sarcasm.
“Don’t worry, I had my lawyer draft this yesterday. I’m not asking for a single cent
from the Carter family.”
“We’ve got $50,000 in our joint account.“.
“Legally, it’ll be split down the middle-$25,000 each.”
“Alexander lent me $10,000 for my mom’s medical bills.”
“I calculated the interest at the current market rate. This account holds $35,000 for
him, and I’ll keep the remaining $15,000.”
“If there are no objections, just sign it.”
I flung the divorce papers at him.
“We’ve split everything evenly from the start, from dating to marriage.”
“So don’t go around telling your parents or grandfather that I’ve been living off
your
money.”
“After all, we even split the cost of birth control.”
At my last comment, every eye in the room turned to Alexander.
Even the staff couldn’t help but frown.

Alexander’s face turned dark as a storm cloud.
“Emma! What the hell do you think you’re doing?!”
“Fine, I’ll admit you’re my wife in front of everyone. Is that enough for you? Just
stop
this nonsense!”
I stood up, coldly smiling,
“If you won’t agree to a divorce, then we’ll settle this in court.”
“And when that happens, let’s see who ends up more humiliated–you or me.
Think
it over.”
I turned to leave, but Alexander grabbed my arm.
