After Mr. Barrett escorted my parents out, he joined Liam in the study.
“Sir, while Mrs. Hawthorne may have changed recently, the DNA test doesn’t lie. You should rest easy.”
Liam sat straight in his chair, his head leaning back, eyes closed. He spoke slowly, “Mr. Barrett, ever since that pendant broke, I haven’t had a good night’s sleep.”
“Do you think it’s possible that she’s… gone, just like my parents?”
Mr. Barrett was visibly startled, waving his hands in protest. “Sir, don’t say such things! I’ve been with the Hawthorne family since your father’s time. They were good people, and you have their blessings. They’re surely watching over you.”
Liam opened his eyes, a bitter smile tugging at his lips. “Good people end up with ruined families. Everything I’ve achieved came from being ruthless.”
“To outsiders, the Hawthorne family seems perfect, but it’s all built on money.”
“My mother, in her dying moments, made me promise to restore the Hawthorne name. It’s tragic that now that I’ve finally done it, there’s no one left to celebrate with.”
“And now… even she’s gone. Everyone’s gone…”
I stood beside him, and even though we existed in different forms, I could feel the sorrow and loneliness radiating from him.

Mr. Barrett wiped the tears from his eyes and called him “Young Master” again, like in the old days. “That pendant breaking could’ve been a
coincidence.”
Liam narrowed his eyes, taking a deep breath before he spoke again. “There are things I need to face, whether I want to or not.”
“Mr. Barrett, I want you to investigate Nina Dawson’s recent activities and re–examine Sarah’s past. The Dawsons claimed they sent her abroad for medical care, but by the time she married me, she didn’t seem healthier, nor
could she even read basic English.”

“When I visited her parents with her recently, it was clear how much they doted on her. But in the two years prior, they barely had any contact.”
“And one more thing–when she was a child, Sarah had a fractured left big toe. I saw the old injury on her medical reports when we first married. But
now? It’s gone. They’re not the same person.”
Liam continued listing more discrepancies, and I was shocked by how
closely he had observed me.
Mr. Barrett, too, had grown serious, recognizing something was off. He
