As soon as I finished speaking, Jessay flushed with anger, pointed at me, stuttering, “You, you…” but before she could finish, dizziness overcame her, and she fainted right there,
A rush of doctors flooded into the room, turning it into a scene of complete chaos.
Throughout the commotion, I sat by the ER door with Mike, cool as a cucumber,
Mike tried to start a conversation several times, but I just kept my head down, pretending not to see.
He knew what bringing me to see Jessa could trigger.
Yet, he had made his choice between Jessa and me, choosing the healthier partner who could stay by his side into old age.
Mike has never truly loved either of us; he’s always loved himself the most.
In his eyes, women are mere options, commodities for his selection–Jessa when he needed drama, me when it was time to
settle down.
But I am not an object; I’m not sitting around waiting to be picked.
Jessa spent a day and a night in critical care before she was finally out of danger.
When she awoke, I was the first person she
saw–not Mike.
With no need to play nice for his sake, she looked at me with venom. “Lynn, every night I’ve dreamt of you bloodied and being carted away. I so wish you had just died that day!”
“If I had died, who would be here to send you to hell?” I shot back.
“I was only away for a few years, why should you be the one with Mike! He’s supposed to love me! He should be
marrying me, having kids with me!” Jessa’s eyes were blazing as she fixed her gaze on
- me.
Her naivety made me almost laugh. She only saw Mike’s successes and never considered the tough years I endured by his side.
“If you hadn’t stolen things, you would have been by his side all this time.”
Jessa’s face froze, and panic flitted across her expression.
“You’re lying! I didn’t steal anything! Mike proved I was framed!” she insisted.
“Do you really think Mike had the power back then to prove you were framed?” I asked, a wry smile crossing my lips.
Fear took over Jessa’s face as realization
dawned.
“It seems you’ve figured it out. Yes, it was me. I was the one who, behind Mike’s back, secretly contacted your classmate.”
