“I went with you to the hospital for the check–up. The report clearly stated…” Sean started, but I didn‘ t let him finish.
“That was just a misdiagnosis,” I said, cutting him off with a flat tone that shut him down instantly. “The doctor said I’m perfectly healthy.”
“And by the way,” I added, leaning in just a bit, “I’ve got a pretty high fertility rate.”
I wanted to make sure he understood exactly what I was saying.
The years of our marriage hadn’t been easy. His family, especially, had never let me forget that I wasn‘ t able to get pregnant.

“He’s my ex–husband,” I explained flatly. “This house belongs to me now, and we have no relationship anymore.”
But Sean wasn’t done making excuses. He tried to convince the officers that this was just some petty argument between a young couple.
One of the officers glanced at the divorce papers, his expression shifting from neutral to disapproving.
“You‘ re already divorced,” he said, his voice cutting through the tension. “And you’re still here causing a scene? You know how to make guys look bad!”
The officer shook his head and pointed at the paper I held. “It’s pretty clear here that you were the one who cheated and got another woman pregnant. How’s she the one causing trouble?”

He’d thought I was just making a fuss. But now, as he read the fine print, the truth was there in black and white. The cause of our divorce was his infidelity. And the fact that he’d knocked up his secretary? Yeah, that was part of the deal.
“Michelle, how did you find out?” Sean whispered, his voice shaking. The smug, cocky attitude he usually wore was gone, replaced by nervous guilt.
“These are just rumors,” he said, trying to keep some of his dignity. “I’ve been completely innocent with Veronica. How could I cheat on you?”

Grayson just chuckled, mocking him.
“I didn’t know I had a girlfriend named Veronica,” he said, his voice oozing sarcasm. “Sean, if you‘ re gonna lie, make your stories believable. Otherwise, you‘ re just gonna end up looking like a fool, and trust me, that’s not gonna be nearly as fun as you think.”
Sean’s rage was palpable now.
His face was twisted in fury, his fists balled up so tight I thought he might break something.
“Michelle, don’t believe his nonsense!” he shouted, but the words had lost their bite.
His world was crumbling, and he knew it.
