Chapter 9
The doctors and nurses kept telling him to leave, but the bastard wouldn’t budge.
Finally, Jewell in the room next door had enough. She stormed out, walked right up to him, and slapped him. Twice. Hard.
“You” ve got some goddamn nerve showing your face here, begging my best friend, huh? Haven’t you hurt her enough, Clay? If I were you, I’d be too ashamed to live! Thank God she didn’t marry you–you’d have ruined her life! Get the hell out of here, and don’t ever come back!”
Then Clifton came. He had his bodyguards drag Clay out, and before they left, Clifton gave them one final order: “If he dares come near her and harass her again, beat him until he regrets being born.”
Clay was too scared to mess with Clifton. He stayed gone after that.

Not long after, a bunch of Clay’s ex- employees came forward and reported him for tax evasion. The cops swooped in, and before he knew it, he was under investigation.
It didn’t take long for the charges to stick. The asshole was sentenced to at least 10 years in jail.
I saw him on the news, crying like a pathetic idiot in court, shouting that he
was innocent.
The man I thought I loved more than myself had become strange and hateful after everyone learned who he really was. I couldn’t believe I’d been blind and I’d
ever fallen for him.
His downfall came quicker than I
could‘ ve hoped. Honestly? He deserved it!
Later, a friend told me Melissa became a walking joke among her family and friends. One night, she went to a bar, got drunk, started a fight, and ended up with a

busted leg. She lost her job and spiraled into depression.
The two of them? Both ruined. It was satisfying as hell!
A few months later, on a bright, sunny morning, Clifton showed up. He had a bouquet of roses in one hand and a diamond ring in the other.
Then, the guy got down on one knee. Het was emotional as he proposed to me.
“Lorraine, I’m not good at pretty words, so I’ll keep it simple: if I ever cheat on you after we get married, may I be struck by lightning and die on the spot. If you re not ready to marry me yet, that’s okay. I’ll wait as long as it takes.”
His eyes were glassy like he was holding back tears, and at that moment, I couldn’t hold back mine either. I grabbed his hand, my voice breaking as I said, “Yes. Yes, I’ll marry you!”

burned by Clay. But even after all that, I still believe in love.
Over these past months, I’ve fallen for Clifton completely. He’s been there for me–for seven years, quietly loving me and protecting me. For the rest of my life, I just want to hold his hand, face the world. together, and live happily with him.
We hugged so tight, both of us crying like idiots.
The storm was over, and the light finally broke through. We didn’t miss out on each other. We didn’t miss out on real
love.
