Chapter 14
It seemed like, for the first time, Amanda truly realized how terribly Sheena had been living as her daughter.
At times, she couldn’t help but think that the love she spent each year on charity for children in poverty–stricken areas might have been more than what she had given Sheena.
A sharp, aching pain suddenly surged in her chest, and Amanda could no longer sleep. She decided to get up and go to the room where Sheena had stayed.
The hallway was dark, not a single light in sight, and Amanda felt a bit afraid as she
walked.
She suddenly remembered a time when
she had seen several clear bruises on
Sheena’s knees. At the time, not knowing what made her ask, she had casually inquired about it.

Sheena had said that she had fallen while getting up to go to the bathroom at night.
At that moment, Jasmin had laughed uncontrollably as she teased, “The bathroom’s just in the room, and there’s light. How could you possibly fall like that?”
“Sister Sheena, you wouldn’t have intentionally hurt yourself like that just to gain sympathy from Mom, would you?”
Hearing this, Amanda had thought Sheena was being overly calculating, and she had even kicked her out of the room before the massage was finished.
Now, walking down the same path, she realized just how absurd her misunderstandings of Sheena had been.
After arriving at Sheena’s room, she noticed the air was damp and cold, despite the fact that there were no windows. The chill made her shiver.
Frowning, Amanda entered and scanned.

the room. The only thing she saw was a small picture frame on the stool by the
bed.
She remembered this picture frame.
When Sheena was sent to the countryside, the only thing she had taken with her was this frame.
But when she turned it over, she found that
it was empty.
How could this be?
She clearly remembered that the picture inside was a family portrait of the four of them.
Even now, she could vividly recall the moment she had received that family photo. Sheena, at eight years old, had a joyful face as she hugged her neck and kissed her cheek.
“This is my favorite photo, and I want to keep it with me forever!” the young
Sheena beamed.

In fact, Sheena had truly done that.
When she was sent to the countryside, Sheena had taken the family photo with her, and when she returned, it was still by her side.
But now, why was the frame there, yet the photo was gone?
Amanda lost her balance and nearly fell to the ground.
Unconsciously, she squeezed the picture frame in her hand, the sound of her nails scratching the glass causing her head to ache even more.
“It must be there. The photo has to be there!” she muttered to herself.
Amanda searched every corner of the room, but found nothing.
Then, she wondered, ‘Could it be that Sheena had taken the photo with her?‘
But the events of this morning were still fresh in her memory. She had been there.

when Sheena packed her bags. Aside from a few clothes, Sheena had taken nothing
with her.
Amanda‘ s breathing quickened. In a panic, she called the servants one by one to question them. But none of them had seen the family photo.
It was only when Mayla, the servant responsible for cleaning the garbage, suddenly spoke up, saying that she had seen some torn photo pieces in the trash a few days ago.
Amanda’s heart tightened. She immediately ordered Mayla to take her to
find them.
Days had already passed, and although the trash hadn’t been completely taken away, all the waste had been tied up in dozens of
large bags.
It wasn’t going to be easy to find a few fragments of a photo in a pile of trash as large as a small mountain.
