Evalina O’Donnell’s world crashed when the doc said, “Honey, we need your husband to sign off on this D&C procedure.”
She was reeling from the news about her lost baby. However, her husband Hugo Hayes was now off with the woman he was really into, Olive Anderson, for a prenatal check–up.
Evalina’s fingers clenched, her shoulders shaking just a touch, hidden from the doc’s view. A bitter smile tugged at her pale lips. “Can’t I just sign it myself?” she whispered.
The doc looked up, all business. “Sorry, sweetheart, it’s the hospital’s rule. Your husband’s not too busy for this, is he? What’s the point of a husband who can’t even do this much?”
Evalina’s mind raced. ‘Yeah… What am I doing? We’ve been at odds for a month. What’s the point of still clinging to this marriage, refusing to divorce him?‘
Flash back a month. The O’Donnell family was in shambles. Evalina’s dad took a tragic step, and her mom was in the hospital, battling depression. Evalina showed up at Hugo’s place, drenched in the rain, hoping he’d lend a hand to her family.
She knew he’d always been distant from the O’Donnell family since their marriage, but she had her trump card–she was pregnant. For three years, he’d been super careful, but this time, after getting drunk, they ended up expecting. And maybe he would do her a favor because of the baby.
But there she was, soaked to the skin, watching Hugo cooking up a storm for Olive, who had a slight baby bump.
He was the golden boy of the Hayes family, all high and mighty, and had never cooked a meal for her in their three years together, but everything was different now.
Olive had a delicate, charming face and bore a resemblance to Evalina, and despite her pregnancy, she looked as graceful as ever. Standing next to Hugo, they seemed like the perfect couple Evalina, the real wife, felt like an outsider.
Though Evalina was all disheveled, Hugo didn’t bat an eye. He just blurted out, “Let’s get a divorce.” He brought up divorce for the first time.
Evalina glanced at Olive, who was smiling next to Hugo. She didn’t need to ask. She knew why he wanted a divorce.
Her lips trembled, and in a hoarse voice, she managed to say, “I don’t agree.”
After that, Hugo packed his bags and moved out of their villa. Evalina never saw him again.
Ever since, Evalina was all alone, handling her dad’s funeral. Then, outta nowhere, some lowlifes started causing trouble One of them pushed her down, and… she lost her baby.
Staring at the medical report, she picked up her phone and called Hugo, her voice barely a whisper.
As soon as she picked up, Hugo’s cold voice came through. “You inally agree to the divorce?”
“Our baby’s gone. Can you come sign the surgery papers?“–the words got stuck in her throat. She was quiet for a long time. All she could hear was Hugo’s heavy breathing on the other end. Finally, she choked out, “Yeah, I agree.”
Hugo seemed surprised. Every time he’d mentioned divorce before, she’d beg and plead, not wanting to let go. This time,

she agreed so easily. But he just said, “Meet me at the courthouse at nine tomorrow morning.”

Right then, a sweet voice came through the phone. “Hugo, look at the baby’s ultrasound. I think he looks just like you.”
It felt like an invisible hand reaching through the line and gripping her by the throat. Evalina couldn’t hold back any longer. She dropped the phone and started retching.
