But Evalina just told Vanessa, “He’s just a regular Joe. Anyway, I’m thriving now. Water under the bridge. And since you’re here, I could use a hand moving. I’ve been crashing at a hotel and haven’t found a pad yet.”

Vanessa stopped teasing. “You’re right, time to move on. Relax; hook you up with someone better since I’m back with you.”
“We’ll see. Anyway, I’m just happy you’re back. Let’s eat. My treat Evalina said, looping her arm through Vanessa’s.
Vanessa said, “Honey, let me get this!”
Evalina knew Vanessa saw the news about her family’s money troubles, but she insisted, “No, I got this. Even with the divorce and the family drama, I can still buy you a meal.”
Vanessa looked at Evalina’s grin and nodded. “Yeah, you right! Divorce is just the start of something new. We deserve a feast to celebrate.”
The two of them headed to Elegance Dining. Before Vanessa went abroad, they used to come here all the time. It’d been three years, and a lot had changed.
As they settled into their seats, Vanessa looked around and said, “This place still looks as fancy as ever.”
“Yeah,” Evalina replied, “I wonder if the food still tastes the same
The food arrived quickly. Evalina took a bite and realized it didnt taste as good as she remembered.
Maybe she had gotten used to the gourmet meals when she was with the Hayes family, where the chefs were top–notch. Thinking about it, her three years with the Hayes family weren’t entirely wasted.
While she was lost in thought, a voice from nearby caught her attention. “Wow, Lydia, Jason is so good to you. That bag is a limited edition, right? Must have cost a fortune.”
Another voice added, “Lydia, you’re looking more stunning every day. Success in both career and love–everyone must be so envious!”
They turned to see three women, all dressed to impress, walking in together. Evalina looked closely and recognized the leader of the group as their college classmate, Lydia Gordon.
“Evalina?” Lydia, decked out in designer duds and looking like she just stepped off the pages of Vogue, raised an eyebrow at Evalina and asked with disdain. “Didn’t your family go belly–up? How’re you splurging here?”
Evalina hesitated. Back in the day, Lydia was her shadow, always buttering her up. But now, with the tables turned, Lydia was showing her true colors.
Vanessa, who’d been watching the scene unfold, slammed her fork on the table. “Lydia, what’s your beef? Evalina was always there for y’all, especially you. She’d share her cash, her clothes, everything.
“Now you’re with Jason and you’re throwing her under the bus? What happened to all that ‘bestie‘ stuff?”
Lydia’s face froze for a second, and then she went off. “Vanessa, get with the program. Evalina’s not the high–society princess she used to pretend to be. She married some old rich guy right outta college; thought she’d live the life.
“But he got tired of her and tossed her to the curb. And now, boom, the family’s in the poorhouse. She’s got squat. So why’re you still trying to be her BFF?”

“Lydia, cut the crap,” Vanessa snapped, fuming.
