Chapter 27
Evalina was hanging out at the Hayes place on Arosea Road, killing some time. She spotted Hugo’s ride pulling up and figured Olive would be with him. But when Olive popped out, Evalina couldn’t help but smirk.
Hugo caught Evalina’s eye and felt a weird pang of guilt. What was that about? He and Olive were an open book to everyone. No reason for him to feel sketchy.
“Hey, Evalina, Olive said, strutting over and rubbing her belly. “Sorry for the surprise visit. Hugo and I thought Bramwell should meet the little
one.”
“Let’s not keep him waiting,” Evalina said, breezing past Olive without a second look.
Olive’s face dropped. She gritted her teeth, muttering to herself, ‘Just you wait, Evalina. You think you’ve got this all figured out? We’ll see!
Olive spun around to face Hugo, but he was all eyes on Evalina walking in. Olive stepped right in front of him. “Hugo, Evalina’s not ticked I showed up, right?”
“Nah, let’s get inside,” Hugo said, shrugging it off and ushering Olive in.
Evalina walked in and saw Bramwell. He had silver hair but still looked strong. He pulled her in, acting like a kid waiting for candy. “Evalina, you’re finally here!” he said.
“Bramwell, I’ve been busy. I didn’t know you wanted me to come. I thought maybe you didn’t miss me. You could’ve called me,” Evalina smiled and helped him.
“I’ve been waiting for you. I’ve had the kitchen whipped up all your faves. I bet Hugo’s been hogging you all to himself, huh? Don’t mind him. You come on over anytime.” Bramwell shook his head as if Evalina was his real grandkid, not Hugo.
Hugo and Olive walked in on this sweet scene. Bramwell, the bigwig who’d been calling the shots in the business world for ages, was all soft and loving with Evalina. It was a side of him nobody would’ve guessed.
Olive remembered how Bramwell used to seem so cold and untouchable to her, like a big scary figure that had her on edge.
Hugo thought he was cool with how Bramwell acted, but seeing this still threw him. What was Evalina’s secret? How did she get Bramwell to treat her like his favorite? Hugo had never seen Bramwell show him, his own blood, that kind of love.
Bramwell whipped his head around, his face hardening as he saw Olive. “Hugo, you can’t just bring anyone here like it’s some open house,” he said, his voice sharp.
Olive’s heart sank. She stepped forward, trying to look meek. “Bramwell, I just wanted to catch up. It’s been ages. I’ve missed you a ton and couldn’t wait to see you again,” she said, her voice soft and a little shaky.
