Chapter 85
Caleb
Almost A Year Later
“WAAAAAHHHHH!”
I turn around in bed, about to cover my ears, when Leah kicks my leg. “It’s your turn with the twins,” she mumbles and lifts one hand in the dark room. “I pumped two bottles they are right over there.
My eyes are burning from a lack of sleep, but I still manage to sit up and turn around in the dark. Our twin boys–Maddox and Ethan–are screaming in their cribs right next to our bed. It really just two cribs glued together at the ends
“You’re not going to help me?” I ask tiredly, “I can’t feed both of them…
Leah’s face is buried in her pillow, but she forces herself up with the help of her arms. “I’m so tired, though…”
“I know, Sweetie…” I yawn. “I don’t understand how other people do this..shit, are we bad people if we pay a nanny to bottlefeed them like once a night?‘
“No, I don’t think so,” Leah says. “Some people have the help of their mothers.”
“But not every night.”
“True, but I still don’t think we are bad parents if we have the nanny for one of the night feedings. You’re still working and I’m with the babies all day. I feel…stressed out. Damn. Am I a weakling?”
“You’re not weak, Leah.”
I mean it. Leah took care of me when I had amnesia. She also walked down the aisle while she was hefty and pregnant. Then, she pushed out our baby boys a month later. My beautiful wife did a lot in a year, and I won’t let her talk shit about herself, Not when she is so goddamn amazing. The best wife there ever was. Amen.
“I feel weak, though,” Leah takes Maddox from my arms, and I hand her one of the bottles.
Leah is exclusively pumping since her boobs don’t understand equality. One of them is always more filled than the other and with her pumping, I can also help feeding our boys. Leah, however, has received a lot of shit because of this. To think there are other mothers out there preaching that “breast is best when, in reality, fed is best.
Leah sighs as she cradles Maddox, gently guiding the bottle to his eager mouth. “I just feel like I should be able to handle this on my own. There are moms out there doing this all on their own.”
I settle next to her on the bed, Ethan nestled in my arms as he suckles his own bottle. “And they probably wish they had help, Leah. Don’t get me wrong, it’s impressive seeing what some single mothers do, but you and I have money–why not use it for the sake of our wellbeing and hire a night nanny who specializes in caring for babies?”
Leah breathes a laugh. “You think there is such a thing? Nannies that only work nigbe?”
“There will be after I put out an AD with an insanely high monthly salary,” I shoot Leah a grin. “Besides, there are a lot of students that are struggling in our city. I’m sure we can find one that would kill to take care of our babies two nights a week so we can get some sleep.”
“Probably…” Leah falls silent then, and I watch how she chews on the dry skin on her bottom lip. It’s the telltale sign of her

Chapter 85
averthinking
“What is it?”
“Huh? No, nothing I was just
“Overthinking.” I finish for her. When I see she is about to make an excuse for herself, I quickly add. Tm your husband. Leah. You should be able to tell me anything
That gets her sighing. “Okay, so… I’m an author, right?”
“Yes?”
“And I’m very guilty of having an overactive imagination.”
“Mhm?”
50_um—what if this nanny fall,hic
love with you? I mean, you’re handsome, rich, and you know.”
I can’t help but laugh, cutting off Leah’s rambling. “Seriously? That’s what you’re worried about?”
Leah blushes, avoiding my gaze. She looks adorable since her cheeks are still chubby from giving birth. Like a shy hamster. “I know it’s silly…
“It’s more than silly.” I say, shifting Ethan to my shoulder to burp him. “It’s downright ridiculous. Leah, you’re the only woman I want or need. No nanny, no matter how attractive or charming, could ever compare to you.”
Leah’s eyes finally meet mine, a small smile tugging at her lips. You mean that?”
“Of course I do,” I say firmly, “You’re my wife, the mother of my children, and the love of my life. No one could ever take your place.”
Leah’s smile widens, and I can see some of the tension leaving her broken shoulders. “I love you.”
“Love you too.”
We finish feeding and burping the kids before going back to bed, Leah is spread out like a starfish and I laugh when my drooling and snoring menace of a wife rolls into my side. Seconds later, her leg is resting over my waist and I release an amused sigh.
“You’re lucky that you’re cute..”
The following morning. I’m cooking us breakfast. Leah woke up to help me feed the boys, but she went back to sleep directly after they were fed. I don’t mind. She needs all the sleep she can get, and now, with her gone, I can cook breakfast while making an ad for the night nanny job.
I mix pancake batter and focus on making it perfect before I pick up my phone with my free hand. Soon, I’m Imping pancakes while typing up the job listing. It’s stressful, but I like it. The smell of pancakes, bacon, and coffee fills the kitchen, and I’m actually…happy.
Is that weird?
Maybe, but it’s my truth. Despite the many sleepless nights Leah and I have survived, the rings underneath my eyes, and the constant chaos inside our house, I wouldn’t trade this life for anything in the world.
Chapter 83
I don’t regret marrying Leah, even if I’m honestly too old for her My wrinkles are coming in, but Leah tells me I’m aging like a fine wine–I really hope she isn’t lying to make me feel better since I would like to be handsome for my wife
Just as I’m putting the finishing touches on the ad, I hear the soft padding of feet behind me. Turning, I see Leah wearing a Pokémon oodie as she shuffles into the kitchen, her hair a mess and eyes still heavy with sleep.
“Morning, beautiful,” I say, leaning in to kiss her cheek as she passes.
kas
Leah grunts in response. She isn’t the friendliest person in the morning and heads straight for the coffee pot. I chuckle. knowing she’s not fully human until she’s had her first cup of the liquid gold or whatever you would call the black drink.
“Breakfast right?”
almost ready,” I tell her, and then I cock my head to the side with a smile, “I really love you, you know that,
Her tired eyes narrow. “Okay, what have you done now?”
I raise an amused eyebrow. “Do I have to be guilty of something to say that I love my wife?”
“Yes”
I snort and drop the pan to pull my little menace of a wife into my arms. Leah giggles as she falls against my muscled chest, and I kiss her head, smiling at the scent of baby puke that seems to follow her wherever she goes. But you know what? It’s the best smell in the world because it reminds me of what I have–a family. And for that, I’m the luckiest man in the world.
