Chapter 23
The dining table was set. The aroma of roasted deer and wild boar filled the air, making mouths water.
There was enough for everyone–steaks and rabbit haunches. Steam rose from bowls of roasted vegetables and wild mushrooms. I took a quick glance at Serena no doubt that she was very happy. How much I deprived my sister of my company in bid of finding the truth and putting Jared where he belonged.
Klein joined us he came earlier to pass important information to me and I made him stay over for dinner.
Jared was also present. Serena invited him.
I broke the tension in the air.
so Lisa” I turned to her, my face, emotionless.
“I never knew you were Jared’s sister, how come no one knows about your relationship with him?
She swallowed hard almost choking on her meal.
“LI” she stuttered, taking shallow breaths, trying to calm herself.
“She’s my sister.” Jared said hastily, his eyes widened, panic setting in
“She was made to live with my aunt when she was just a little girl. It’s not been long since she returned”
“I see, so.” I paused, creating more tension in the air.
Jared was tense, his eyes darted left and right the hall. Lisa seemed to be a novice in the game of telling lies, but Jared was certainly a pro.
“And why exactly is she in the pack? I mean, don’t get me wrong, the pack house is open to everyone–anyone. I’m just surprised that she chose to stay here instead of catching up with her brother.” I smiled mischievously, my gaze fixed on jared
“She’s my friend sis, I had to let her stay with me since she said that she didn’t want to live with Jared at the moment.” Serena spoke in her defense.
My poor Serena, only if she knew that Jared and anyone related to him could not be trusted. Only if she knew his plans and what he made me go through in the past. Even while I was pregnant for him.
But she was too young and naive, she was raised with so much love, hence everything she exhumed was love.
My father made sure she didn’t lack anything unlike me, who was made to work and train under difficult situations because of the journey ahead.
The journey of becoming the Luna of the Shadow pack.
I turned to Lisa. “Why didn’t you want to stay with your brother, Lisa? Is it that you didn’t miss him? Won’t it be more desirable for you to want to catch up with him?”
“I was with him for a while before I moved in with Serena
“So..” Jared cut me short saying.
“It seems this is an interrogation session.” He chuckled.
“Of course not, I mean the pack is open to everyone like I said earlier. I just thought that your sister would prefer to spend. more time with you.. you know. Except of course you’re a pain in the ass.” I laughed but no one joined me.
Klein let out a soft smile, he knew what I was trying to do.
“… and you look pretty fine too Lisa, I thought Serena said you were sick. You don’t look sick to me.” I took a bite of my roasted beef, enjoying the tension in the air.
“I took some herbs, all thanks to the moon goddess that I’m better now. And thanks to Serena too, she’s a great person.” Even though Lisa tried to stay calm, I could feel the tension in her voice and I enjoyed it.
“Sure she is, she’s my sister after all.” I turned to Serena, a soft smile playing on my lips.
“I bet I can’t say the same for your brother,” I muttered within myself but Klein heard it.
Jared was no longer comfortable, the atmosphere was too tense for him. His fingers tapped nervously on the table.
Maria didn’t say anything, she never liked Jared, even in my previous life. She would always say that there was something odd about him.
Then I didn’t understand it but now, I was definitely on her side.
Klein was finally beginning to understand me, although at the dinner he didn’t say any word as regards the topic we were discussing.
The last time we met, I made him promise to stay with me and to act as though we had no relationship whatsoever, whenever we were together in the pack.
Thankfully, he was adapting to it.
Seeing him closer to me and not being able to touch him the way I wanted broke me, but I didn’t have a choice. I had to do it for my pack.
Jared was too powerful and I wasn’t sure how far his betrayal cut, I didn’t want anything that would make Jared suspect Kleine
In no time we were done with the meal and Elish; alongside other maids cleared the table. If I was to be honest, I was very happy to have had that conversation with Lisa. The way she spoke and her body language made it obvious that something was fishy.
Jared was up to something, I guess he was trying to use Serena to achieve his goals. Apparently, that was all he was good at taking advantage of a naive person. That was the same thing he did to me in my past life,
I can’t believe I was fooled by him to the point of handing over my pack – my birthright to him. I must have really been a foolish lover girl.
As I approached my room, Klein cornered me.
“I actually came to tell you something, Silverstone,” he said, holding my hands but I slowly let go of my hand.
“Is there a problem Klein?”
“Can we go inside?”
“No, I told you before, we need to be extra careful”
“I understand that, the thing is, it’s a bit confidential. I doubt it’s safe talking to you about it here.”
“You can go on, no one is here.“
He looked sideways, making sure no one was there. I left Jared, his sister and Serena in the dining room, they were having a small chit chat before 1 left. And it didn’t seem like they would be finishing anytime soon.
Luna Maria left earlier too, she said she had a lot of work to do the next day and that she needed to rest. I even escorted her before heading to my room.
When he was sure that no one was listening, he began, his voice was barely audible.
