Noelle swallowed back her words and glared at Hendrix with gritted teeth.
Hendrix smiled out of the blue. “I just realized something. I can’t seem to marry anyone else. But the strange thing was, when I was about to marry you, I didn’t feel much resistance. Can you tell me why that is?”
Noelle felt as though everything before her was unreal. It was as if she were standing on the edge of a cliff, one foot already slipping, her whole body about to plummet. But instead of the expected shattering impact, nothing
came.
On the contrary, it felt like she had fallen onto a vast, soft cloud. A cloud that was warm and sweet, a sensation she had never even dared to imagine before.
Slowly, Noelle opened her eyes. The warmth of the sunlight greeted her. There was no cliff, no cloud, but the familiar bedroom in Percy Gardens.
So that meant everything that had happened last night was not just a dream. As Noelle sat there, lost in thoughts, the phone next to her suddenly dinged.
It was a message from Hendrix. He had forwarded two news articles to her.
The first was a report about Maxwell. The article mentioned that he had been involved in a car accident last night, suffering two broken ribs, but fortunately, his life was not in danger.
The second was about Amity Group and Wright Corporation. It was reported that the two companies had successfully concluded their partnership. During the press conference, a journalist asked Hendrix about his relationship with Yvonne, to which he responded, “Yvonne and I are just friends.”
He went on to say that their partnership was not limited to just this project, and he looked forward to more future collaborations with Wright Corporation. As soon as he made this statement, the rumors about him and Yvonne were instantly reduced to nothing more than a joke.
Noelle read through both news articles, but she had no idea how to respond to Hendrix. In truth, she still hadn’t fully come to terms with her own shifting identity, nor could she quite get used to the way Hendrix was now treating her.
After staring at the screen for a while, she finally set her phone down quietly. It was nearly noon by the time she finished washing up and stepped out of the unit,
The elevator doors opened quickly, but Noelte froze in place as soon as she saw who was inside.
Standing in the elevator was Beatrice, and beside her was a middle–aged man she didn’t recognize. In that brief moment when the doors opened, the two of them had been standing very close to each other.
It was the first time Noelle had seen such a soft, feminine look on Beatrice’s face. Of course, that expression vanished the instant she laid eyes on Noelle.
The man clearly didn’t recognize Noelle. But the moment he saw Noelle, he instinctively stepped in front of Beatrice, and it was clear from his stance that he was trying to shfeld her.
Are you getting in or not?” asked the man impatiently when he noticed Noelle still staring at Beatrice.
It was only then Noelle snapped out of her daze and stepped into the elevator. The large elevator was now occupied by just the three of them.
Noelle’s back remained stiff, and her hands were balled inte fists.
Just then, her phone rang–it was Hendrix. Without even thinking, she quickly hung up the phone. But he called.
