After seeing Clayton off, Noelle stood alone in front of the cafe. The heatwave rolling in from the street was a sharp contrast to the cool air from the air conditioning inside, and it made her throat itch uncomfortably.
Fighting the urge to cough, Noelle pulled a throat lozenge from her bag and popped it into her mouth just as a call from the office came through, urging her to return for a meeting.
The meeting’s agenda was similar to what Craig had mentioned to her a few days ago. The past two years had seen a sluggish market, but Amity Group, as the industry leader, seemed untouched by the downturn.
The incident with Beatrice had caused quite a stir at the time, and Hendrix was labeled as cold and unfilial by the media. He was also accused of pushing Beatrice to the brink, leaving her with no choice but to take that tragic path.
Meanwhile, the couple who had lost their son, Lloyd, took every opportunity to find reporters to smear his reputation. Hendrix seemed completely unconcerned. He went about his daily life as usual and even managed to find time to start a new relationship.

“Ms. Swanson, I just realized something.”
After the meeting, Oliver quickly caught up with her. His face was filled with excitement.
Noelle didn’t even look back. “What?”
“The man I ran into in front of your apartment that night suddenly remembered who he was!”
“Oh? Who?”
“It was Mr. Freeman from Amity Group! I thought he looked familiar, and just now, when I was going through the documents, it clicked!”
Oliver’s words made Noelle pause for a moment, but she simply responded with a brief “oh” and showed no other
reaction.
“Is he interested in-”
“Did you forget about how I got alcohol poisoning last time” Noelle reminded him “So, it doesn’t matter who handles the project, as long as it’s not me.”
Oliver couldn’t come up with a suitable reply.
Noelle rubbed her temples. “But we still need to fight for it I’ll talk to Mr. Garcia and have him take over the negotiations.”
“Okay,” Oliver looked disappointed, but then he quickly reminded her, “By the way, don’t forget that you have a follow–up appointment at the hospital tomorrow.‘
Noelle had a meeting with Julio Garcia that very day.

Though Noelle didn’t believe Elm Group had much competitive edge in this matter, it was clear they couldn’t afford to sit back and do nothing.
Their meeting lasted until 11:00 pm, and not only was Noelle’s throat dry from speaking for so long, but she was utterly exhausted as well. Yet, when she finally lay down in bed, sleep refused to come.
Oliver’s words kept resurfacing in her mind. She still didn’t understand why Hendrix had shown up that night. But whatever the reason, it couldn’t possibly be because he was worried about her. He had said it himself–there was no future for them.
And now, the faint, lingering pain in her stomach constantly reminded Noelle of his cruelty. She squeezed her eyes shut, forcing her emotions down.
The next day, Noelle went to the hospital on time. The follow–up results were fine, but the doctor prescribed her a bunch of new medications.
Noelle had barely settled into the car when Julio’s car came through.
