Chapter 9
I walked through the stone–paved alley, greeting the passing residents.
As I passed a household, an elderly woman came out and handed me a bag of oranges.
“Thank you, Mrs. Smith,” I said.
Mrs.Smith smiled, her face full of wrinkles.
Five years ago, when I first arrived in this small town, I met Mrs. Smith on the side of the road, who had slipped and fallen into a ditch, and jumped down and pulled her up.
When they learned I hadn’t found a place to stay, Mrs. Smith’s family insisted I live with them.

They prepared a portion of the soup they made for Mrs. Smith for me every day.
Over time, I found that the town’s residents were simple and sincere, without any scheming.
So I decided to stay.
I lived there for five years.
Perhaps due to the pleasant environment, my health had also improved significantly.
“Another bag of oranges from Mrs.Smith, huh? Mrs.Smith is becoming more biased, not even giving me one, all for you.”
A young man suddenly said, taking the bag from my hand.

He was Alex, the town mayor’s son, who had entered a prestigious school with top county grades. However, after graduating, he didn’t stay in the big city but returned to his hometown, saying he wanted to revitalize the village, almost getting beaten up by the mayor.
Initially, I hadn’t paid much attention, but later, seeing him go all out to find suitable local development ideas–drinking with investors.
until he vomited and cried by the roadside–was quite pitiful.
I asked him for a project proposal, and after revising it and getting his consent, I found several investors. Now, the town was developing tourism by planting fruit trees and promoting handicrafts, maintaining the original lifestyle of the residents. It made the town

hopeful.
Alex treated me as a mentor, and came to discuss every idea with me whenever he has it. And he always managed to find me, making it impossible for me to avoid him.
One day, he presented me with a bouquet of flowers and said he wanted to pursue me.
I took it as a joke since he was five years younger than me.
But soon, many villagers spoke highly of Alex in front of me.
Even the village mayor’s wife suggested that if I married Alex, I would be in charge of the household, which embarrassed and annoyed
- me.

How many people had Alex told?
The next day, Alex announced via the town’s broadcast that his pursuit of me was a personal matter between us and asked the townsfolk not to interfere, to avoid scaring me away, or he wouldn’t be able to find a wife in the future.
So, although people still looked at me and Alex with teasing eyes, they no longer pressured me.
Alex never urged me to make any decisions, and we continued to interact as before.
Gradually, I got used to having Alex around.
As we walked towards where I lived, a man was standing at the door.

Alex instinctively stood in front of me.
I looked at the man’s back, unable to believe my
eyes.
Sensing something, the man turned around, and it was indeed Charles.
He was wearing ill–fitting mountaineering clothes, his face looked worn, and he had
several white hairs.
I felt a sense of surreal disconnection.
Charles saw me and smiled, “Morita, I finally found you.”
“Who is he?” Alex asked, eyeing Charles warily.
“My ex–husband,” I said calmly.

Alex’s expression turned scornful, but he
relaxed.
“So, you are Morita’s ex–husband. I’ve heard a lot about you. I’m Alex, Morita’s boyfriend,” Alex said with a forced smile, extending his hand to
Charles.
Charles ignored him and stared at me, with his gaze urgent, “Morita, is what he said true? Have you really found a boyfriend?”
I found his reaction strange.
“We divorced a long time ago. It’s none of your business if I get a boyfriend.“.
“But I’ve been looking for you for five years,” Charles said, tears streaming down his face. “I

know I was wrong. I just want your forgiveness, so I’ve been searching for you.”
Alex snorted.
“A healthy person became frail due to your selfishness. What right do you have to ask Morita for forgiveness? You’re just seeking to ease your own conscience. It’s hypocritical.”
To make Alex give up, I shared the details of what had happened to me with him. Although I looked healthy now, I had a half liver less than a normal person, and no one knew what might happen in the future.
Unexpectedly, Alex hugged me, crying, and scolded Charles and the Green family, swearing that as long as he was around, no one would harm me again.

Alex now held more influence in the town than his father. With a single call, he had a group of young men come and drag Charles away.
“Rest at home. I’ll handle the rest,“Alex pushed me inside, then chased after the group.
From a distance, I heard Alex’s spirited voice.
“Guys, throw him out of Bell Town. I’ll treat everyone to a barbecue. From now on, if anyone sees this person, just throw him out. I’ll cover everyone’s late–night snacks.”
I laughed.
Having someone to back me up felt really good.
