I remembered.
I had the ability to run out of the blazing fire, but the thought of my parents‘ lifelong teaching to protect my sister made me turn back to rescue Jennifer, even though I was almost out of the danger.
I dragged her along, almost reaching the doorway.
But then she quickly crawled out and slammed the door shut, trying to lock me inside.
This was my sister, the one I had protected all my life, making such a choice in a life–or–death
moment.

She was responsible for my death, yet she could calmly discuss it with our parents.
“If that girl hadn’t died, she could have earned three thousand dollars a month. It would have been so nice to have that money for your pretty
clothes.”
After I graduated from middle school, my parents stopped letting me continue my education. They thought I was foolish, too old to still be in school.
What had they said back then?
“Your sister is so young; your dad and I can’t trust her alone in elementary school. If you repeat a grade and stay in the same class with her, you can protect her, alright?”

Naively, I felt I had been entrusted with a great responsibility, and I replied loudly, “Sure!”
My usually stern parents displayed smiles of
relief.
My sister and I both attended middle school. My grades were clearly falling behind, so I brought up the idea of a tutoring class to Dad. He replied, “There are many things the school teaches. If you haven’t learned them there, what’s the point of going to a tutoring class?”
However, when it came to my sister, he feared she would struggle, so he spent money on her tutoring classes and extracurricular activities.
She became more and more like a city girl, while I remained the same little country bumpkin.

I could have caught up with some basic help, but I never had the opportunity for extra tutoring. If I fell behind, so be it.
I finally managed to rank first in my class and proudly showed my certificate to my parents, yet they comforted my sister for her poor exam performance instead.
“It’s alright; your sister just excels in her studies. Look at you, balancing dance and piano lessons; your grades will catch up soon.”
