Chapter 10
I felt a sense of satisfaction; when Jennifer had walked into the police station before, she hadn’t batted an eye. Now, she was clearly rattled.
She knew someone would take the blame, that everything had been planned perfectly; as long as her responses didn’t raise suspicion, she wouldn’t be caught. So, she hadn’t been
worried.
But now, faced with the unknown of whether the camera had captured her locking me inside, she was clearly unnerved.
With growing doubt, Matt forced her to watch the video.

In it, Jennifer closed the door, then swiftly collapsed just a few minutes later, only to be carried away by neighbors who had come to extinguish the fire.
The footage also captured my desperate cries for mercy, a heart–wrer hing sound that seemed to drop the summer temperature several degrees.
A section of the wooden door had been consumed by the flames, ultimately collapsing onto me when I had already lost all signs of life.
Matt stared in disbelief at the surveillance footage before finally speaking.
“Let’s break up. Your heart is too cruel.”
Tears streamed down his face, engulfed by a

profound sense of helplessness.
“Ha! Are you breaking up with me because you like Serena?” she spat.
“If you didn’t like her, would I do this?”
Jennifer broke free from his grip, pointing at Matt and speaking each word deliberately.
Why does this concern me?
It didn’t matter; I knew Matt well enough. He would call the police once he learned the truth.
“Let’s not involve your sister in our relationship; please respect her.”
“I never said I liked your sister. Even if I did, that wouldn’t justify you hurting her.”

“If you didn’t like her, why were you so happy talking to her on my birthday? Do you have
any idea how much that hurt me? I wished she
weren’t there so you wouldn’t pay any attention
to her.”
“I loved you so much, and on my birthday, you
couldn’t care less about me.”
“So, you killed her?! I’ll hand this evidence over to the police.”
Faced with Jennifer’s aggressive tone, Matt looked utterly incredulous.
I had thought Jennifer was harming me to monopolize our parents‘ love, but I hadn’t
realized it was because she believed Matt liked
- me.

Of course, she had always been the favorite; how could she kill me over this?
“Please don’t call the police. I’m your girlfriend!”
Upon hearing the sensitive words, tears streamed down Jennifer’s face as she clung to Matt’s leg, her expression pleading.
Seeing her so vulnerable made me worry that Matt might waver, but fortunately, he was principled; his expression didn’t change at all.
“Call the police. We must report this!”
An elderly woman’s fierce voice echoed in the room as Matt’s grandmother glared menacingly at Jennifer.

Jennifer was taken away by the police.
With Matt’s footage as evidence, they also checked my family‘ bank statements and discovered that the compensation money from my father’s bank card had recently been
transferred.
The person using his bank card was Jennifer.
Through multiple investigations, they traced the money’s whereabouts and found it had been funneled to Tom under the guise of a dowry.
What had once been a hazy truth was now clear
and coherent.
