Chapter 9
“I didn’t expect Jennifer to go through all this. I’m sorry it took me so long to visit,” Matt said, smiling as he held a beautifully arranged fruit. basket in one hand and a bouquet of flowers in the other.
“It’s okay; we understand. After what happened to Jennifer, even our relatives hesitated to come
by,” my mother replied, taking the fruit basket with an empathetic smile.
It was clear my mother was pleased with Matt;
her smile never left her face, even as she headed
to the kitchen to prepare dinner.
In the living room, the two of them expressed their sorrow over my death. Jennifer had red,

puffy eyes as she leaned comfortably against
Matt’s shoulder.
“I lived with my sister but couldn’t save her. Now, I can’t sleep at night,” she lamented.
“Now that the truth is out, I can finally sleep well,” Matt added.
I sat across from them, watching them use their tears to convey their grief for me.
Only Matt’s sorrow was genuine; he was the first person to show me kindness besides my grandmother.
Unfortunately, he was now with the one who had caused my death–Jennifer.
After dinner, Matt spoke seriously, “My

grandmother told me that if I started dating someone, I should bring her to meet her. Would you come back with me?”
With no hope for a reversal of fate and nowhere else to go, I had no choice but to follow Jennifer.
As the car pulled away, I recognized the familiar scenery.
Finally, the vehicle stopped in front of a small two–story house next to our old home.
Jennifer’s expression shifted from anticipation to anxiety.
“This is my grandmother’s house. I lived here when I was little. Don’t be nervous; my
grandmother is really nice,” Matt reassured her, pulling her close with a friendly gesture.

She wasn’t nervous; it was just that being in a place that had caused me harm made her feel
uneasy.
I hadn’t anticipated that my neighbor’s house would be Matt’s childhood home; the charred
structure next door was where I had lived since I
was little.
I was eager to know what had happened to my body.
My parents hadn’t claimed my remains, and I had no idea how my body would be treated.
With Jennifer leading the way, I was pulled back to her side and followed her inside.
“This must be Jennifer; she looks lovely. I

remember seeing you when you were little,” a kindly old woman remarked as she beamed at
her.
“Grandma, Jennifer didn’t live here when she was a child,” Matt explained, noticing Jennifer’s pale complexion.
I realized that Matt’s grandmother mistook Jennifer for me. When my grandmother was busy, I often went to this house for meals, and over time, we had become familiar.
Matt’s grandmother offered an apologetic smile and pulled Jennifer down to ask about her
recent life.
Jennifer seemed restless, and Matt gently
comforted her.

My gaze shifted to Jennifer, where a camera was located.
The camera was perfectly positioned to capture the door where Jennifer had locked me inside.
Now, the old house stood as nothing more than a skeleton, stripped of everything.
If that camera had been active at the time,
it would have recorded the scene of Jennifer
locking me in.
She remained composed, answering Matt’s grandmother’s questions despite her inner
turmoil.
As Matt’s grandmother stepped out to pick vegetables, Jennifer curiously asked, “Matt, why did you install a camera at home?”

“My grandmother prefers to live alone, but we worry about her, so we installed the cameras for her safety,” Matt explained earnestly, concerned that Jennifer might feel offended.
“If you don’t like it, I ca urn the camera off
now and turn it back on after we finish dinner
with Grandma,” he offered.
Jennifer glanced at Matt as he reached for another phone, quickly interjecting, “No need to turn it off; this way, we can keep an eye on
Grandma’s activities.”
My heart soared with excitement, but at that moment, it felt as if a bucket of cold water had been thrown over me, chilling me to the core,

footage of the fire and uncover the truth.
But he didn’t open it; instead, he gently said, “Jennifer, thank you for your understanding.”
If she hadn’t noticed the direction of the camera, anyone would believe she was a kind–hearted young person who genuinely cared for elderly people living alone.
“But this camera is aimed right at the door of your old house; why not take a look?”
My emotions swung like a roller coaster, but right now, I felt elated.
Quick, don’t ask for opinions–discover the truth!
Still immersed in Matt’s earlier gentle tone,

Jennifer snapped back to reality as he opened
the video.
Flames soared high, accompanied by thick smoke, dominating much of the screen.
“Don’t watch it. Isn’t une truth already clear? Why waste time? Let’s get ready for dinner,” she stammered, grabbing the phone in a panic.
“What are you afraid of?” Matt grasped her hand, snatched the phone, and demanded.
The Matt who had just been so courteous was now intimidating, leaving Jennifer visibly
shaken.
