She had been desperate all week. She was used to not hearing from Alex during the day, but she always knew that he would eventually come home to her. Even when they didn’t talk for days, she at least knew that at the end of the night, he would fall asleep right next to her. But now that he was on a business trip, there was no contact between them at all. She was tempted to call or text him, but he had told her not to bother him unnecessarily, and she didn’t want to overstep. She didn’t think she would miss him.. but she did.
“Earth to Ruby,” Scott said.

He shook his head at her, annoyed. He’d been updating her on his love life, and all it had done to her was make her worry about her own. She sipped her tea and leaned back into her regular chair at their local coffee shop.
“Your mind is as absent as my brother is.”
“Have you spoken to him this week?” she asked, unable to help herself.
Scott shook his head. “Nah, but I know he speaks to Mom every day. Hasn’t he called you?”
She shook her head. “Do you think he’s just ignoring me?”
Scott shrugged. “I dunno. Maybe he finally figured out you have a huge crush on him and it freaks him out.”
She slapped his arm lightly. “Shut up.”
“Don’t worry, baby sis. When it comes to emotions, my brother is a bit slow.”
She rolled her eyes. “We’re the same age, moron.
He shrugged. “I’m like, three months older.”
“Whatever.”
It hurt just a little that Alex did seem to have time for phone calls, yet he hadn’t even texted her. She wished she’d told him she would go with him when he first mentioned the trip, but she was too scared. She was too scared her mom might need her and she would be too far away
“Elena, you remember our pact, right?” Scott said, snapping her out of her thoughts. “It’s childish, I know, but still…”
She nodded, her expression turning serious. Scott always knew about her crush on Alexander growing up. They used to fantasize about becoming siblings when she would finally marry his brother, and they had made countless promises to each other just in case it ever actually happened. Even though most of their promises were childish, they took them very seriously, and there was one she knew Scott would want her to keep. “I will always keep your secrets, and I will try to never be caught between your brother and you,” she promised him
He grabbed her hand and pressed a kiss to the back of it. “I knew I could count on you, princess. I wish you hadn’t done it, I wish you hadn’t married him because I don’t want to see your beautiful heart break And honestly, my brother wouldn’t recognize love if it hit him in the face. But since you went ahead and married him, we’d better come up with a way for to win my brother’s heart. So that the next time he goes on a business trip, he’ll be so in love with you that he’ll be calling you every second he’s got.”
She groaned, this plan had disaster written all over it.
“You know the way to a man’s heart?” he asked.
She nodded. “Through the stomach,” she answered.

Chapter 34
Scott shook his head. “Nope, It’s through his dick.”
She blushed and looked around them, but luckily no one was sitting near. “God, Scott, could you be any louder?”
Scott crossed his arms and nodded at her. “Tell me, what is your sex life like? Don’t you dare leave any of the juicy details
She blushed. “Really, Scott? I can’t do that.” She said, shaking her head furiously.
Scott grinned. So he has at least fingered you then?”
She slapped her fingers over his lips. “Shh! Are you nuts?”
“Have you seen his nuts yet?” he mumbled through her fingers on his lips.
She kicked him, and he groaned, putting his hands up in defeat She let him go and look around warily, terrified of being overheard. “Yes, and yes, she admitted, begrudgingly.
He grinned like a maniac. “Tell me everything.” he said, chuckling.
“There’s not much to tell,” she said. “We, uh, we sleep together a few times a week. Other than that, he he almost touched me at the chib,
“Holy shit. Come to think of it, I’ve never seen him so mad before. Tell me exactly what he did.”
She groaned, she knew Scott was never going to let this go unless she told him the whole story. So she did. She told him all about what happened at the club, about the day in his office just before he left for his trip, and every other time. By the end of IL Scott was equal parts amused and equal parts amazed.
“Well, damn. You did it in his office? I had no idea my robot of a brother could be that impulsive and passionate.”
She blushed and nodded..
“Damn, so why the hell isn’t he trying to sext you, or you know, have full–blown phone sex? Do you think he’s avoiding you because despite everything he says, he doesn’t want to use you? Maybe he grew a conscience over there.”
She smiled, she couldn’t help it. Scott always wanted to believe in the good in people, and though he was the first to admit that his brother wasn’t perfect, Alex was still the person he looked up to the most. “That makes no sense. He was very clear on the terms when we got married. He’s a bit nicer now, but he still doesn’t hesitate to remind me that he owns me, and that our marriage is nothing like all the others.”
Scott shook his head. “Alex isn’t as ruthless as he thinks he is. I bet you’ve shaken him already. No one has ever triggered his protective instinct like you always have, even when we were younger. He could have easily waited a couple of weeks or months to formally marry you, but he locked you in the second he could. It’s not like you’d have ran off or anything, and he would usually be stubborn, yet he refused to wait. Alex is never impulsive, but he wanted you. I doubt he even realizes it himself
She looked up at Scott in surprise, scared to even believe his words. “He told me he needed to marry anyway. That he only married me for convenience.”
Scott nodded. “That’s true, I’m sure part of it was convenience for him. But do you really think my brother would marry anyone just for that reason? He wouldn’t have married you if there was no way to make things work between you two, but he probably doesn’t want to acknowledge to himself that he feels that way. He didn’t really need to rush into marrying you. He could have waited or found a way around it if he really didn’t want to do it, but he didn’t.”
She frowned, lost in thought. “He was fulfilling his end of the bargain by taking care of my mother’s bills, by taking me in. It does make sense that he’d want me to fulfil my promises too. I think signing the marriage papers and agreeing to the wedding was really just another contract to him. I don’t think it means anything to him.”

Scott thought over her words, neither of them able to figure out Alex’s behavior. “You know what you need right now?” he asked. She shook her head, too scared of what kind of nonsense might come out of his mouth this time.
“Something sexy.”
She rolled her eyes. “That’s your plan? Your mother’s stylist alreadly took care of all that. Every single one of my nighties is sexier than anything I’ve ever worn.”

Scott grabbed her hand and dragged her to the closest lingerie store, and she knew she was in a whole world of trouble.
