Chapter 42
Trevor watched the video, which meant to pack a punch. Kylie’s casual ease with the man was even more evident than in the photos. His brow pinched, and he texted back. [You’re very idle?]
Upon seeing the message. Zach felt a jolt in his chest. It was clear Trevor wasn’t fond of Kylie; otherwise, he wouldn’t be so nonchalant.
He felt a sudden urge to avoid his boss’s radar, realizing he’d better not test the waters again. Yet, he was curious if Kylie was equally indifferent to Trevor’s feelings
With a sharp tug. Trevor loosened his tie. A shirt button flew off clattering to the floor. He glanced at it and then bent to pick it up, rolling the finely crafted button between his fingers as it caught the light.
His cold gaze flicked to his wristwatch–8:10 PM. His already emotionless eyes turned even colder.
After leaving the barbecue restaurant, Kylie and Ethan were about to go their separate ways. As Kylie said her goodbyes, Ethan got straight into her car. “I’ll drop you off at your place first. Then I’ll head back to the dorms.”
“It’s almost eight. I’ll drop you off at the dorms,” Kylie said, her eyes downcast as she prepared to start the car.
Ethan’s expression grew serious, and he looked at Kylie intently, I spent the most time with you growing up. I can always tell when something’s bothering you, Kylie. Is something on your mind?”
It was just the two of them today, and Ethan could see right through Kylie. Lately, she’d seemed like a different person. exuding a sadness and loneliness that was suffocating. It felt like his sister, whom he’d protected and cared for, had been hurt when he wasn’t looking.
Kylie was aware of Ethan’s concern. She gripped the steering wheel, contemplating telling him about her sudden marriage, but then she remembered her secret marriage pact with Trevor, After a few minutes of hesitation, she said, “I got married.”
“Married?!” Ethan was taken aback. He thought, ‘She just broke up with Craig. How could she get married so soon? What has Kylie been through? She’s never been impulsive.
“Who did you marry? How old is he? What’s his job? How did you meet? Ethan fired off questions, worried that Kylie, heartbroken by Craig, might have fallen for some man with ulterior motives,
Kylie answered earnestly, “It’s someone Noreen introduced. We didn’t rush into it. There are reasons I can’t introduce him to you yet. He has a steady job and is five years older than me, and even though it was a quick decision, he’s been good to me.”
“So it’s a marriage of convenience? Kylie, did you read too many romance novels? Do you really believe in love after marriage?” Ethan’s face darkened. He was determined to meet this man who had cast some sort of spell on Kylie, making her marry so impulsively.
*Im not thinking about love after marriage. Novels are just stories. I’m not a character in one. We’re just… cohabitating. It’s not complicated. Ethan, don’t worry. After all that I’ve been through, I know what I’m doing.” Kylie said as she started the car.
Ethan still looked concerned. “Did that man buy you the car?”
Kylie, so young, had just found a man to share her life with. The thought that she might have settled down out of the heartbreak from Craig pained him. He felt an uncontrollable urge to confront Craig.
“It’s my own car, and things will get better at home,” Kylie said.
Ethan frowned. A new energy car like this would cost around 30,000, Kylie had been doing restoration work and could indeed make some money. “Are you living with him now? Eilar asked.
“Yes, it’s his house. Kylie looked ahead, watching the busy traffic and she suddenly felt a weight lift from her heart.
