Chapter 3
A flicker of uncontrollable jealousy flashed in Tina’s eyes for a brief moment.
But she she put on a fragile, vulnerable facade.
She bit her lip, eyes brimming with tears, turning her gaze toward David.
Then, in a trembling voice, she gently pushed
him away.
“Forget’it, David. You should go back. You don’t have to come here anymore. I don’t want to upset Charlotte.”
Then she turned her gaze toward me, tears in her eyes, her face full of grievance.

“Fine, fine! I’m the shameless one clinging to both of you! It’s all my fault! It’s my fault Allen died, it’s my fault everyone treats me like a jinx, and it’s my fault no one cares about me! Charlotte, is this what you wanted?”
With just a few words, tears welling up, she placed me on the moral high ground, making it seem like I was the villain.
With a loud “bang,” Tina slammed the door, forcing us out.
When we got home, David kept a sullen expression, his face darkened with anger.

with me looking after his wife and daughter?”
“I think you’re just making a big deal out of nothing.”
David grabbed his blanket and stormed off to the study.
There was no explanation, no comfort, not even a trace of guilt toward me.
Their excuses were always so perfect, as if everything was my fault for overreacting.

I bit my lip, swallowing back all the things I wanted to say.
If tearing things apart with Tina meant I could get my peaceful life back, then I didn’t regret it.

However, it was clear Tina wasn’t ready to let me off that easily.
Early the next morning, there was a loud knock on the door.
As I opened it, Tina’s mother stormed in with a crowd of people behind her.
Before I could even see her face, she slapped me
across the face.
“You wicked woman! You nearly killed my daughter!”
“If anything happens to her, I’ll throw myself dead at your doorstep!”
Behind her stood a group of mutual friends- friends of both Allen and me.

Each one of them looked indignant, faces filled with anger.
“Charlotte, I really never thought you could be so cold–hearted! Aren’t we all friends? Isn’t helping each other out the right thing to do?”
“Exactly! Couldn’t you just be more generous? Now Tina tried to kill herself, are you happy? That’s a human life–doesn’t your conscience
hurt?”
My ears rang from the slap, but one phrase kept echoing in my head.
Tina tried to kill herself?!
