Book 3: I’m in Surgery While He Celebrated Her Birthday with Our Son
On the sixth anniversary of my marriage to Alexander, I found myself in a car accident, laid up in the operating room.
At that very moment, he and our son were throwing a birthday bash for his childhood crush, Olivia.
With my last ounce of strength, I managed to get in touch, asking him to come to the hospital to sign and pay the bills.
After what felt like forever, the call finally went through.
“Josephine, How can you still be insatiable?

Don’t you ever grow weary of these annual celebrations? Olive has just returned to the country, she’s all alone and in need of support.”
Even my own flesh and blood, my son, took her side:
“Mom, can’t you be less harsh? Apparently
Aunty Olivia is so pitiable a goody, isn’t she?, we just out of the goodness keep her company on her BIG day”
After being discharged from the hospital, I resolutely decided to divorce.
Later, the father and son, as if they had lost their minds, begged me to come back home.

Before the accident, I had just received a photo from Alexander’s childhood sweetheart.
She was holding a cake and smiling sweetly at Alexander, while our son George nestled in her arms. In the photo, the three of them looked like a perfect family.
“Josephine, I’m really sorry. I don’t have a clue that today is your special day. After the birthday celebration, I’ll send them back later.”
This wasn’t the first time Olivia had flaunted and provoked me.

But this time, I was in no mood to entertain it.
Today is our sixth wedding anniversary, and last month when I got Alexander two cents about how he wanted to celebrate, he just said it was
up to me.
That’s right, I’ve always been the one preparing, while he just shows up after work.
I had booked a restaurant in advance and
cherry–picked an anniversary gift.
Even the dress I was going to wear and the perfume I was going to spray were carefully considered.
I waited for him with joy, and five hours later without his appearance, only to ask his

secretary instead for losing contact with him by phone
“Mrs. Lee, Mr. Lee has cleared his schedule for
tonight and left work early.”
It turns out Alexander’s eyes aren’t only on work, he just doesn’t direct that attention towards me.
I turned off the phone screen, looked at the table full of dishes and red wine, and suddenly felt utterly bored.
Chasing after Alexander with a smile on my face, boring.
Staying at home to be a wife and mother for our son, even more boring.

The wind on my face, the drunkenness faded a
bit.
The green light came on, I was walking on the zebra crossing, when the accident came out of nowhere.
A car out of control was coming towards me, its lights flashing, and in a daze, someone pulled
- me.
All senses seemed to suddenly hit the slow–motion button.
There were people crying, people shouting.
I couldn’t make any movements, and when I came to a bit more, I was already lying in the operating room.

The doctor asked me to contact my family and hurry to the hospital to sign and pay the bills.
With my last breath, I took out my phone and dialed Alexander’s number.
“Beep.”
As soon as it rang, the call was immediately hung up.
The same thing happened twice.
In the past, I wouldn’t have bothered him like this.
Now it’s me who’s been in a car accident and needs surgery, with only him and our son as my closest relatives.

After a long time, he finally deigned to answer.
But as soon as he spoke, it was a barrage of impatient accusations.
“Josephine, How can you still be insatiable? We celebrate our anniversary every year, while Olive has just returned, feeling lost and in dire need of companionship. Can’t you show some understanding for once?!”
She needs someone to accompany her on her birthday, what about me?
I wanted to explain that I was in the hospital.
Between surgery and a birthday, I think Alexander can tell which is more important.
Before I could say anything, I heard our son

George’s voice on the phone.
“Mom, don’t be so mean to Aunty Olivia? Apparently she is so pitiable a goody, isn’t she? We just out of the goodness keep her company on her BIG day.”
“Dad, hurry up, we’re about to cut the cake.”
“Alex, are you done yet?”
Before the call ended, Alexander reluctantly admonished me:
“Stop making a scene, Geordie and I will be back later.”
How ironic!
