Chapter 2
At the very last moment, I signed the consent forms and underwent the surgery myself.
The doctor said I was fortunate–just a mild
concussion and a broken collarbone.
By contrast, another person who came to the hospital with me didn’t survive.
Later, when the traffic police came to get the details, I learned that if not for the kind stranger who pulled me back, I would be lying in the morgue instead.
“We’ve detained the drunk driver. The person who saved you had late–stage lung cancer; even if revived, he wouldn’t have lived long. It’s tragic

for the girl they left behind, suffering a bereft of home and family at the young age for born without a mother, along with the only parent is gone. Sigh.”
A girl of about six or seven, with red–rimmed eyes, sat quietly by the morgue door.
A small bundle, she stared blankly at a spot.
No one could persuade her; she refused to leave, clutching the door handle until her nails. were scraped and bleeding, as if she felt no pain.

I crouched down to meet her gaze and, driven by some strange impulse, said:
“Your daddy has gone to heaven. Will you stay with me? If you adore me, I can be your new mommy and give you a family.”
The girl’s round eyes filled with tears as her lashes fluttered, and she suddenly threw herself into my arms, sobbing uncontrollably.
That’s how I truly became a mother.
Perhaps because she had no mother from the start, Daisy seemed more mature and guarded than other children, like a little hedgehog.
Only with me did Daisy let down her defenses.
Still, she comforted me way more than i

imagined.
“Mommy, you’re not alone. You can rely on Daisy.”
For three days in the hospital, Daisy stayed by my side, her small face tense as if I might disappear at any moment.
She took the spoon and fed me bite by bite.
My mouth agape in shock, for the scene conjured me up my secret memory.
Casting back from the ten months of pregnancy, with a severe hemorrhage during childbirth, I was almost dying to bring my son into the world.
However, it was the adopted child who showed

such compassion.
My heart felt like it was pricked by a needle, swelling with a bittersweet ache.
Daisy often pretend to be irritated, just for urging me to rest and to use her for anything I needed.
My biological son hadn’t sent a single word of concern whereas.
Only a cold message:
“Mommy, Aunty Olivia likes the sea. Daddy is taking us to the beach these days. Do not ruin our emotions!”
