Chapter 4
It’s ironic that, despite being married for so many years, we had only planned the wedding in this year.
As for my family…
In the fifth year of my relationship with Brian, I
lost all of them.
I remember it vividly. It was the fifth day of the Christmas holidays, the day when my uncles‘ families would visit us.
But I wasn’t home.
Brian’s mother had fallen ill.

To ensure Brian, who was away on a business trip, wouldn’t worry, I rushed to the hospital the night before to care for his mother.
On the fifth day, while she was sleeping, I video–called my mom.
Everyone in my family could tell I wasn’t in the best spirits, and they all tried to cheer me up.
The call lasted more than an hour.
In the midst of that, my mom forgot to turn off
the gas,
The pot burned dry, gas leaked, and an explosion occurred.
Both my parents, as well as my uncles and their families, died in the accident.

I was utterly devastated.
For days, I wandered like a zombie, or worse, I resorted to self–harm.
Brian dropped everything and stayed by my side.
When I was calm, he did everything he could to console me.
When I lost control, he silently endured my anger and insults.
For three long months.
When I finally emerged from the grief, Brian had
grown gaunt, aged several years.

I still can’t understand.
How could a man who loved me so deeply fall for someone else so suddenly?
A sharp pang of sorrow pierced my heart.
Ding, ding, ding, ding…
My phone vibrated repeatedly with incoming messages.
It was my best friend from college, Sarah.
“Kimberly, did you get hacked?”
“Why did you cancel the wedding?”
“Did that scumbag Brian do something to hurt you?”

Looking at Sarah’s barrage of questions, I smiled helplessly.
She was one of the few people left in this world who genuinely cared about me.
Maybe spending my remaining days with a true friend wouldn’t be such a bad idea.
As I was thinking this, Sarah’s call came through.
“Why aren’t you answering my messages?”
“What’s going on with you and Brian?”
“You’re canceling the wedding now?”

I had barely hit answer when Sarah’s frantic
voice came through like firecrackers.
“It’s nothing. I just don’t want to be with him anymore,” I said calmly.
Sarah was silent for a good ten seconds before responding,
“Then don’t be.”
I nodded and said,
“I want to come see you.
“Alright, I’ll book you a flight,” Sarah agreed without hesitation.
“Okay,” I replied, a genuine smile forming on my

lips.
Ding!
Barely five minutes after we hung up, Sarah had already sent the flight information.
“She even booked me first class,” I murmured softly.
Sarah was a young painter who had settled in a small town abroad.
She said the place was beautiful, filled with friendly people.
Suddenly, I felt a sense of anticipation.
Perhaps fate was offering me a chance to spend my final days in warmth and happiness.

“I better hurry and pack,” I whispered as I flagged down a taxi and headed home.
Dragging my aching body through the house, I realized just how little in this place actually belonged to me.
Aside from a few clothes in the wardrobe and a couple of books in the study, everything else was tied to Brian.
I wouldn’t be taking any of it.
But then my gaze fell on the glass cabinet…
