Chapter 4
My mind went blank for a few seconds, leaving me utterly speechless. Without thinking, I clicked on Julia’s social media post.
‘Giggle, today I wanted to experience campus life. Someone teased me for being too childish, but he even took me to tour his school! What a two–faced man.”
The accompanying photo was the same one she had sent me. The familiar backdrop of the school, the small playground with its rubber track. Just beyond a corner, we had once etched our promises to each other.
In that moment, I genuinely loathed Asher. How dare he! How dare he bring his new flame there!

Seeing my lack of response, Julia leisurely sent a question mark. I picked up my phone and replied, “No worries, many girls have sent me this kind of photo. It seems he’s brought everyone here with him.”
On the other end, silence fell, and I felt as though I had fought a tough battle, collapsing
in exhaustion.
I estimated that Asher would return from his trip soon, and I planned to have the lawyer deliver the divorce agreement directly to him.
Less than half an hour later, Asher angrily called me. “How long are you planning to make this a scene?”
“I’m giving you your freedom back.”

My tone was surprisingly light, the last
remnants of love I had felt for him extinguished by his actions.
“If you don’t agree to settle peacefully, I can always go to court. My lawyer is ready whenever you are. As for whether this will affect the company’s stock prices, I’ll refrain from speculating.” I said coolly.
Asher’s personal marriage situation could impact his risk assessments for projects. Especially for a couple like us, whose love was seen as a public image, the fewer people who knew about our divorce, the better.
I continued with a tone that seemed to relish the drama. “I could make this a citywide spectacle. It’s up to you how you want to

resolve this.”
Asher seemed taken aback by my firmness, pausing for several minutes in disbelief. “You’ve really changed. When did you start threatening people…?”
I had no interest in his midlife musings, so I decisively hung up the phone and sent him a message:
“Once the agreement is signed and the money is in my account, I’ll see you at the court tomorrow at eight.”
My remaining time was precious. I wanted to spend it enjoying life, not entangled in this
mess.
It wasn’t until later that evening he replied with

a simple, “Okay.”
The winter in the North was brutally cold. Early in the morning, the roads were icy as I wrapped myself tightly in my coat and thick scarf. Stepping out of the car, I spotted Asher standing frozen in front of the court.
I recalled the joy on his face when we first entered the halls of marriage, never imagining we would end up here.
“Good morning,” I said, instinctively greeting him while tightening my scarf.
He paused, clearly taken aback by my voice, and looked at me for a long moment. Just as I thought he might reconsider, he suddenly said, “Ellie, you look so thin.”

Glancing at my reflection in a nearby shop window, I saw my pale face, ghostly against the light, wrapped in a flowy coat that seemed to weigh me down. I looked utterly frail, like someone deeply wounded by love.
I glanced toward the car parked a short distance
away.
“Is your little girlfriend waiting for you over there?”
Asher’s face darkened completely.
“What nonsense are you spouting?”
“Julia, don’t pretend it’s not true.”
I let out a light laugh. “Asher, you know I understand you better than you do.”
