Chapter 6
I wasn’t in the mood for any fun after hearing all that. Asher’s mother had always been a gentle and loving elder in my memory, treating me like her own daughter and filling the void left by my lack of relatives. Now that she was ill- especially because of our situation–I felt it was my duty to go see her.
My lawyer picked me up from the airport, helping with my luggage while casting a
concerned glance in my direction. “Why do I feel like you’ve lost even more weight while you were away?”
I smiled and shook my head. “Maybe it’s just exhaustion.”

“You have no idea how chaotic things have been with Asher and that little secretary of his. Just the other day, Mrs. Higgins got into a spat with her. She was so upset, saying that angelic bitch had been mocking her age.

I couldn’t help but laugh at that. Although Julia lacked much wisdom, she had enough street smarts to avoid making enemies. Yet Mrs. Higgins, who I had a decent relationship with, seemed to be deliberately trying to put Julia in a tight spot.
“Fighting with a young girl is just embarrassing,” I said with a laugh, without a hint of blame.

The lawyer could see I was in a good mood. “That little secretary was crying like a scene straight out of a melodrama. Mr. Sandoval wanted to defend her, but Mr. Higgins ended up

arguing with him, fiercely protecting his wife.”
The lawyer couldn’t help but chuckle. “People in the industry are now calling that little bitch as a faucet that came to life because she cries so much.”
I found that nickname quite fitting. My lawyer cautiously observed my expression before hinting, “But Mr. Sandoval seemed really upset seeing how affectionate the Higgins were. He left without saying a word.”
At that, my smile finally faltered, and I stood there, frozen for a moment. “Maybe he’s just feeling sorry for his new girlfriend,” I replied, deliberately sidestepping the sensitive topic. My lawyer didn’t seem interested in pursuing it further, and we drove in silence to the hospital.

As I arrived at the top floor of the hospital, I could hear a ruckus coming from the room at the end of the corridor.
“Asher! I’m telling you, if you don’t get that vixen away from you, you can forget about ever calling me your mother!” Mrs. Sandoval’s voice was filled with exasperation.
“It’s not that I want a divorce; Ellie is the one who brought it up,” Asher’s resigned tone followed.
“Of course she did! Would you expect her to put up with your behavior otherwise?” Mrs. Sandoval was clearly struggling to contain her fury.
“What has she ever done to deserve this? Just look at you now!”

“I have no feelings for her anymore!” Asher’s shout echoed as I knocked on the door, which swung open in the wind. Our eyes met, and I could see the redness around his.
Mrs. Sandoval disregarded the chaos and rushed toward me, grabbing my arm and gently cupping my face. “How did you get so thin, my dear?”
Her eyes were red as she pointed a finger at Asher’s forehead. “Have you forgotten what you promised when you got married? Do you remember how I wouldn’t let you date in
school, and how you swore to me then? Who stood by you through all those years when you had nothing? Did you really think you could rise on your own?”

As she spoke, tears began to fall. “I never asked about the company’s situation, but I’m not blind. No one builds a business this big without facing storms. Yet she never complained.”
Mrs. Sandoval held me tightly, speaking slowly and deliberately. “Every time I see Ellie so quiet and withdrawn, I remember how vibrant she
used to be. It breaks my heart to think of all the suffering she must have endured to become this way…”
