Chapter 7
Perhaps it was the last sentence that struck a chord with Asher; he suddenly lifted his gaze to meet mine. Julia stood behind him, biting her lip in evident frustration.
“What are you doing here? I’m in a relationship with Mr. Sandoval now. You’re just the ex–wife, and you can’t even keep your distance. How shameless can you be?”
Seeing Asher silent for so long drove Julia nearly to madness; she charged at me, demanding answers.
Slap!
The sharp sound of a slap echoed in the room.

I instinctively glanced at the now gray–haired Mrs. Sandoval, who had fiercely protected me in her embrace, glaring at Julia.
This woman, who had always been gentle, was finally standing up for me.
“What do you think you are? Who gives you the right to swagger in here? may not want this son, but I want this daughter!”
Seeing Mrs. Sandoval tremble with anger, I quickly supported her and patted her back, trying to calm her down while offering Asher a gentle smile.
“Is this what you call charming or…full of spirit‘?”
Asher continued to look at me, his eyes still red.

“I’ve wanted to tell you for a long time that your taste is truly terrible.”
I shrugged nonchalantly. Julia tried to interject, but Asher suddenly shouted, “Get out!”
Julia glared at me defiantly. Just as I was about to say goodbye to Mrs. Sandoval, Asher seized Julia’s arm and flung her out the door.
“I’m telling you to get out!”
Julia stood frozen in place, as if the sky had fallen, tears welling in her eyes.
“Ashie…”
“Don’t call me that!”

Asher slammed the door shut like an angry lion.
“Ellie, I…”
It was strange; in my memories, the young Asher was always passionate, like the sun. The mature Asher was decisive and rarely displayed such hesitation and longing. He took a deep breath.
“What I said earlier was out of anger. In truth, I regretted our divorce the moment it happened. I’ve been regretting it every moment since.”
Hearing his sincere yet hesitant confession, I felt an overwhelming sense of irony. Why is it that we only learn to appreciate what we’ve lost?
I looked at him coldly, assessing the truth behind his words. I never imagined we would

come to doubt the authenticity of each other’s feelings.
The news of our divorce had a significant impact on his personal image. While his business interests might not suffer greatly, his character had taken a hit in the eyes of others, making potential partners cautious in their dealings with him.
Perhaps without my meticulous care, he found life quite inconvenient.
A flurry of reasons for his regret raced through my mind, but his next words caught me off guard.
“I couldn’t bring myself to admit I was wrong until I saw you just now. realized that I’ve always loved you, and that hasn’t changed over

the years.”
