Chapter 8-

Chapter 8
It’s truly ironic, isn’t it? You’re already divorced and yet still professing your feelings.
“What about Julia?”
“I only liked parts of her that reminded me of you.”
Asher grasped my hand anxiously.
“I’ve never crossed any lines with her, Ellie. We’ve just spent so much time together that I mistook that comfort for affection between family members.”
“I can’t accept that.”

His panic was palpable as he heard my decisive rejection.
“I swear, I’ve never wronged you, Ellie. I’ve loved you my whole life.”
For the first time, his gaze held a plea.
“We’ve been together so long that I overlooked your mistake. I promise to spend my life making it up to you.”
The sincerity in his eyes only deepened the irony for me; I had no lifetime left to waste on him.
But seeing Mrs. Sandoval’s hopeful and cautious expression, I couldn’t bear to turn him down in front of her.

After a long silence, I finally said, “Let’s go for a walk.”
I booked a ticket back home, and at first, Asher had no idea where I was taking him.
It wasn’t until we got out of the car and caught the salty scent of the sea that he realized we were returning to our old hometown.
The old town hadn’t changed much; even the small shops still bore the same signs.
I led Asher to a small eatery, where we hadn’t visited in years, a cozy spot known for its sliders.
The owner looked just as I remembered, greeting us warmly when he saw us.
As I ordered, he studied me for a moment before

breaking into a smile.
“You two used to come here all the time, right? Students from the nearby high school?”
To my surprise, Asher appeared a bit flustered.
“You remember us?”
“Of course! You both used to eat here regularly. Many of your classmates would gossip about you two.”
The owner laughed heartily.
“It looks like you finally got together. Congratulations! Back then, I could tell you two were meant for each other. Your chemistry was something special!”

“Really?”
“Absolutely! Your boyfriend–well, now he’s your husband–used to sneak me a bit of cash just so I could give you extra food, worried you’d get too thin.”
Hearing a stranger reminisce about us hit me harder than I expected.
Back then, Asher noticed even the slightest change in my weight, but now, after seeing me so worn down, he openly criticized how I had changed.
As the owner returned to his tasks, our meal felt unusually silent. The once–delicious food now tasted bland and stale.
A wave of dizziness washed over me, and my

chest felt heavy, making it hard to breathe.
The doctor had advised me to maintain a positive mindset; perhaps I shouldn’t have returned, as revisiting the past was inevitably distressing.
Asher’s concern for my pale complexion was evident. “How come your face looks worse after just a few months? Let me take you for a check–up at the hospital.
I shook my head. “I had a check–up earlier this year, remember?”
“When was that? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“When Julia called you, crying about messing up a client project, I didn’t have the chance.”

Asher fell silent, unable to respond.
After lunch, we strolled through the campus together. The school looked just as it always had. Relying on my memories, I found the corner where we had once carved our promise into the wall.
“We’ll be together forever! Never to part!”
