Unexpectedly, my phone rang in the middle of the night again.
It was Zack messaging me on
on WhatsApp.
Messaging on WhatsApp in the dead of night – I thought something big was up, so I answered..
His expression was unusually flustered. “Melody, why did you blacklist me?”
11 must have been an accident? That was always his favorite excuse.
“How could it be an accidem?”
1 don’t know!
His voice raised as if I had committed some unforgivable sin. “How could you not know you blacklisted me?” Being woken up in the dead of night made me angry. Is there something important? If not, I’m hanging up.”
He shouted on the phone, “Don’t hang up.”
“Your luggage is gone, and the wardrobe is empty. Are you not planning to come back home?” His voice trembled, breath unstable.
He finally noticed that I had cleared out the house.
Well, he spent the weekend going out with Claire for two days, so he would naturally discover it when he came back.
These past two days, I took the time to scroll through Claire’s social platform.
She updated quite frequently, each time showing off their love subtly.
For example, in her latest post, it was Zack holding her hand while walking on a glass plank road,
Caption in moments of fear, having you by my side brings peace to my heart!”
I replied indifferently. “We’ve broken up. It’s not appropriate to live together anymore.”
He hoarsely exclaimed, visibly agreted, “Who said we broke up? I disagree,…”
I had already hung up
He repeatedly called on WhatsApp
was annoyed, and about to delete him
Suddenly, he sent me a photo
It was a picture of me meeting flyan during the day.
was surprised, he already knew about what happened
Alter
ng the day.
10:20 AM
“Who is he?”
Is it because of him that we broke up?”
1 knew it Why have you been so cold to me recently?”
“Is he so great that you would abandon me for him?”
“Melody, I need an explanation from you.”
I replied, “Just a regular friend.”
After replying. I deleted his contact.
Shortly after, I fell asleep.
I was woken up in the morning by my mom, saying Zack had called her early in the morning, asking her to persuade me to remove him from the blacklist.
My mom didn’t sleep well, and I didn’t want him to call her phone again, so I unblocked him.
As soon as I did, he called
It was as if he was guarding his phone, waiting for me to unblock him.
He was a busy man, even when I called him, I had to try several times to get through.
His attitude was unusually humble: First, he apologized profusely, then asked when I would come back, offering to pick me up.
Just hearing him offer to pick me up gave me a headache.
I was also afraid he might do something irrational and actually come to pick me up.
I firmly refused him.
But when I got off the high–speed train, I saw Zack standing at the exit, holding fresh flowers.
I paused for a moment, my steps halting.
Zack’s shirt was a bit wrinkled, and he wasn’t wearing a tie.
His expression couldn’t hide his fatigue, his brows furrowed, and his eyes bloodshot.
Clearly, he hadn’t slept all night.
Seeing me, his face instantly lit up with a smile that reached his eyes. He strode towards me, just like in the early days of our love, giving me a hug before offering me the flowers.
I didn’t take them.
Looking at this man who seemed to have eyes only for me, for some reason, I felt an indescribable sadness in my heart.
Perhaps it was for the Melody who was abandoned during the earthquake.
Perhaps it was for the Melody who was forced to give up the front passenger seat.
Or perhaps it was for the Melody who loved him wholeheartedly, only to give up on him after her heart was thoroughly broken “Melody, I’ve come to take you home.”
He pushed the flowers into my hands, calling me “Melody” with unusual tenderness.
I couldn’t remember how long it had been since he had called me Melody so gently before our breakup.
I didn’t say anything.
He didn’t need me to answer.
“Melody, let’s go look at wedding dresses and set a wedding date when we get back, okay?”
He spoke so earnestly, so seriously that I almost doubted myself.
I doubted whether the Zack who pushed me away during the earthquake and left with Claire was just my imagination. But it was too late.
Zack, a shattered heart, even if pieced back together, would still be covered in score.
