Luke was at the hospital with Grace while my mom sat nearby with an angry expression, and my dad remained silent as usual.
The doctor frowned and scolded Luke, “Don’t you realize the patient just had surgery? How could you be so reckless?”
Luke’s face turned pale, unable to explain himself.
My mom snorted coldly.
“Doctor, did it ever occur to you that maybe my daughter agreed to this herself?”
For a mother to say something like that was cruel.
For over twenty years, Mom had never liked me. I’d grown numb to her sharp words.
But…
I noticed Grace’s hand clench under the blanket.
She had been the family’s darling her whole life. She wasn’t used to being spoken to like that.
Luke nodded toward my parents.
“Mr. and Mrs. Griffin, if there’s nothing else, I’ll head out. We can reschedule the wedding since today didn’t go as planned.”
Grace couldn’t help but cough, trying to make herself noticed.
Luke ignored her. My mom shot her a cold glance, chuckling. My dad pretended not to hear anything.
“Luke, I’m leaving Isla in your hands. Please take good care of her body and make sure it doesn’t end up in some other woman’s bed.”
Mom smirked at Luke.
Luke nodded awkwardly, forcing a smile.
Grace didn’t stay in the hospital long this time. After all, she had been faking her fainting spell.
As the weather grew warmer, even though my body was kept in the

freezer, dark patches of livor mortis began to show.
Under these circumstances, many of the servants at the Harris household started to leave.
Not everyone had the nerve to stick around. Most couldn’t handle the idea of Luke obsessively planning to marry a corpse.
Luke’s shocking behavior had even affected the Harris Group’s stock. I heard the company’s shares had been plummeting for days.
Luke’s Dad was nearly turning gray from the stress.
In this situation, Luke’s Mom finally snapped.
“Luke, let me make this very clear today. I will not allow you to marry a corpse!
“When Isla was alive, you were fooling around with Grace. Now that _she’s dead, you want to act all heartbroken? What’s the point?”
Luke’s Mom, ever the powerful businesswoman, cut right to the point. She had voiced exactly what I was thinking.
I scoffed. Luke was putting on quite the act.
He claimed to love me, all while getting close to Grace. Now, in my death, he was playing the reformed lover, tossing Grace aside.
“Oh Luke, how dare you talk about love? You don’t love anyone but yourself.”
Luke’s eyes were red, his face filled with inner conflict.
“Mom, I already abandoned Isla once. I can’t leave her again.”
Luke’s Mom was quick and decisive.
“Fine. Let me give you one last choice.
“Either you marry Isla and sever all ties with the Harris Group, or
come back and be the Harris heir, and stop talking about marrying a corpse.”
Luke stayed silent for a long time before finally lowering his proud head.

I heard Luke whisper, “I choose the latter.”
