I want to sink through the floor and die after speaking Ethan mut think I’m wildly desperate after yelling into his face that 1 want the job, but he isn’t laughing at me.
Maybe he still hasn’t processed what I just blurted out?
I silently let my eyes wander up his broad chest, past his makeup bag and wide shoulders, until I’m staring into his green eyes. There is shock there, but soon, a devious grin creeps onto los face.
Kill me.

He tilts his head. “You want the job?”
“I do. “As embarrassing as it is, I can’t lie about this. “Living in my parents‘ basement isn’t optional.”
Ethan falls silent, and I worry he must think I’m a pathological liar for suddenly needing his job after I told him I had an interview, which I fucking don’t.
I shut my eyes. “I’m sorry for sounding desperate. I just…I just really need a job right now.”
“No need to apologize,” Ethan actually doesn’t sound angry like expected him to. “If you’re serious about needing the job. you can send your resume to my personal email.
Is he for real?
He can’t be…right? There’s no chance in hell a billionaire is this rice, but when I look at him, he looks serious. It baffles me.
“A–are you
sure?” I stammer. “I don’t want any special treatment I do, but I would never admit it.
“It’s not special treatment,” he assures me. “You’ll still need to go through the regular interview process if they like your resume. I’m just there to make sure they actually read it.”
“That’s really kind of you.”
I mean it. No other man would go

him again, when Maddie pipes up.
“See? I told you he was a keeper!”
I groan at my friend’s embarrassing slip of the tongue, hiding my face in my hands as Ethan laughs.
“I will take that as a compliment.”
To my utter relief. Maddie says nothing more, but if I thought things couldn’t get more embarrassing, I was wrong. When I finally dare to look up. Ethan is wearing the biggest grin ever.
It’s mortifying. I’ve never been this warm and embarrassed in my entire life, but before I can flee the scene by saying I need to visit the bathroom, Ethan takes my hand.

“Here” he places a business card in my hand and carefully clony fingers around it when my hand won’t close on its en “This is my personal email. Send your resume there and I’ll make sure it gets to the right department
My heart is skipping ropes and beats Was it just me, or was there a jolt of electricity when he touched me! Probably my imagination I quickly pull my hand back.
“Thanks”
“My pleasure.” Ethan replies, his voice kind. He then glances at i watch and sighs. “I hate to cut this short, but I have an early meeting. It was great running into you, Freya. And nice meeting you, Maddie.”
“You too” Maddie chirps, looking far too pleased with herself.
As Ethan turns to leave, he pauses and looks back at me. “Oh, and Freya? Instead of popping up wherever I go like a stalker. you should just ask me out on a date.”
1 gasp. “I’m not stalking you!”
“Really? Then why do we keep bumping into each other?”
I don’t have a response to that, and Ethan chuckles before leaving the coffee shop. I watch him go with my jaw on the floor. my heart pounding erratically in my chest. When I turn back to Maddie, she’s grinning like the early bird that got the worm
So, she drawls, “when’s the wedding?”
I groan and swat her arm. “Shut up. Ethan was just being nice.”
“Uh–huh, sure,” Maddie says, unconvinced. “That’s why he gave you his personal email, gave you a job on the spot, and then proceeded to flirt with you,”
“He didn’t offer me the job. He gave me a chance to get the job. There’s a difference…. He also didn’t flirt with me. That was him-”
“Bitch, you
blind?” an old lady wearing shades interrupts me from behind with a permanent scowl to her wrinkled lips. She can’t be taller than 4’8, yet she isn’t scared to glare up at me from behind her shades. “That man wanted your booty, right Elvira?”
An old lady busy knitting a scarf with her tongue out finally looks up. She is just as small as her friend and gives me the friendliest smile before blurting out, “Oh, he was horny for you, girl. Better marry him quickly. Men like that don’t grow on trees… Oh, I miss Carl.”
The older lady pats her friend on the back. “You will see him in Hell soon enough.”
I squint at the two old ladies, unsure what to say. I’m so shocked that I do nothing until Maddie drags me out of the coffee shop while cackling with laughter.
Once we are on the street, she releases me. “Oh my god, those old ladies were hilarious! And they’re totally right you know. Ethan is definitely into you.
I groan, my face still burning with embarrassment. “Can we please just drop it? He was just being nice.”
“Nice? Freya, honey, men like Ethan Steele don’t just offer jobs to random women they met at a bar. He likes you.”
“Even if he did, which he doesn’t,” I insist, “it doesn’t matter. He’s way too young for me, not to mention way out of my league.”

The ‘out of my league part stings to say. I used to be pretty when I was younger and considered Clar’s trophy wife. And sure. I’m still pretty, but I’m turning 30 soon and definitely shouldn’the seeing Erhan who is only 21. He also looks like he stepped out of a GQ magazine, which is seriously intimidating Beautiful men are scary.
Maddie takes a sip of her latte, grimaces at the heat, and then tugs to me. “Freya, could you please stop selling yourself short? So what if he’s younger? So what if he’s rich? If you like l, and he likes you, that’s all that matters”
“It wouldn’t last.”
“Maybe not, but does it matter? You just came out of a long, bong marriage–you deserve to have some fun. You know what fun means, right?”
“So you’re basically telling me to fuck Ethan Steele?”
“Hey, if that’s your idea of fun-
I swat her arm before she can finish and Maddie laughs at me. She is being silly, but she does have a point: I deserve to have some fun.
“You don’t think there’s any harm in sending in my resume AND asking Ethan out?”
“No? Ethan owns the hotel you will be working at, but he won’t be your direct boss.”
“True…
Leonsider her words for a moment. It wouldn’t be the worst thing to ask Ethan out on a date, and yes, I definitely need to get laid after my loveless marriage. But sleeping with Ethan? Nah, that’s like setting myself up for a disaster. I’m a cinnamon roll. and since I just got out of a relationship, I would probably get too attached to Ethan.
“Okay,” I say slowly, “I’ll send Ethan my resume, but I’m not asking him out.”
Maddie rolls her eyes. “Fine, be boring. But at least promise me you’ll flirt with him a little if you run into him again.”
“I don’t know how to flirt,” I mumble.
“Just be your messy
self. He seems to like that”
“Messy? Who are you calling messy?!”
Maddie pretends not to hear, already walking for her car with her latte in one hand. “You coming or what?” she asks.
1 sigh but decide not to pick a fight. “Where are we headed?”
“To my place to write your resume,” a smile spreads over her glossy lips. “I’m helping you land that job.”
