Before Jeremy could respond, I hung up the phone.
The first thing I did in this new city was change my SIM card, ready to start a new life.
Over the years, I had invested and earned a decent amount, saving up quite a bit. With that money, I rented a
small courtyard here, planning to renovate it and open a guesthouse.
The next year, I focused on renovating my little courtyard and when I felt bored, I would go sit at a bar.
In the past, I couldn’t hear and I never dared to go to a bar.
Jeremy would always set up gatherings at bars and insist that I join, saying it would stimulate my eardrums.
But I always refused.
I felt inferior. While everyone was laughing and enjoying themselves, I could only watch their lips move and the sounds from my hearing aid were broken and intermittent.
I felt like I was just a bystander, an unnecessary presence.

Looking back now, I realize that Jeremy was just trying to suppress me. He had grown tired of me and wanted me to back off, to stop interfering with his nightlife.
His tactic worked. I never asked about his gatherings again and that’s how Vanessa became his “foster–sister.
The first time Jeremy brought Vanessa home, I thought she was just a colleague.
Vanessa deliberately shouted loudly near my ear and I jumped in surprise.
Jeremy quickly stopped her, “She’s deaf Shouting like that won’t affect her.”
Vanessa didn’t think much of it
With Jeremy’s protection, Vanessa no longer cared about me. Her provocations at home became a daily routine. When Jeremy was around, she would act sweet and harmless, but as soon as he left, she showed her true colors.
She would yell at the cat I kept and had nothing but disdain for me.
She was Jeremy’s foster–sister, so I couldn’t say much and had to endure it silently.
The world of sound was truly wonderful. At the bar, the resident singers performed with confidence and charm,
entertaining everyone with their vibrant shows.
The crowd let loose, dancing freely in the center of the floor.
Seeing me sitting still and drinking one beverage after another, my friend Lyra pulled me into the middle of the
dance floor
I stood awkwardly amidst the lively crowd, feeling out of place.
Lyra swayed her slim waist gracefully and it didn’t take long before a man stepped up to dance with her. Noticing.
me standing stiffly, Lyra grabbed my hand again, urging me to move.
Following her lead, I hesitantly began to take small steps and soon, I found myself blending into the rhythm of
the dance.
A handsome guy caught sight of me and invited me to the center of the dance floor. I confidently placed my hand
on his shoulder.
As the music played, he held me close, spinning me across the floor
For the first time in years, I felt genuinely happy
As the final beat of the song approached, I turned, only to find Jeremy standing there.
His eyes burned with anger and the colorful lights cast an even more menacing glow on his face.
Instinctively, I wanted to escape, but he grabbed me and dragged me into a private booth.
“Gracie, you’ve really grown bold, hanging out in bars now? Got guts now, huh? Running off without my permission…”
Jeremy was lecturing me endlessly. I grew tired of listening and turned to leave.
“Gracie, you’re really something. You didn’t tell us you were going out to have fun and you made Jeremy worry for so long,” Vanessa said.
Thadn’t even noticed her until she spoke. She was sitting on the sofa, her slightly rounded belly showing. It was Jeremy’s child,
Jeremy was truly ridiculous. He came to find me and even brought his mistress along.
“I can go wherever I want. There’s no need to report to anyone,” I said.
“You’re my wife! How can you be so selfish, leaving without saying a word?” Jeremy seemed to have forgotten the dirty things he and Vanessa did in front of me, avoiding the main issue.
“Jeremy, I’ve known everything for a long time. I know all about what you and Vanessa did. We’re already
divorced.”
I turned away, unwilling to engage further.
But Jeremy wouldn’t give up. He blocked the door, almost roaring, “When did we divorce? I didn’t sign anything!
let me tell you. Gracie, you’ll never get away from ment

It seemed he still didn’t realize that what he signed back then was a divorce agreement.
I chuckled softly and just then, the handsome guy I had been dancing with came to find me.
I placed my hand on his shoulder and shot Jeremy a contemptuous glance.
