I returned home and quickly filled my parents in on the essentials before retreating to my apartment, where I slept soundly until dawn.
When I finally woke up, I found a message on social media announcing that Amelia’s surgery had been a success.
I couldn’t help but give it a like, genuinely happy for her.
I had barely taken a few bites of breakfast when Andrew showed up at my door.
My parents had bought me a place right above theirs, and Ophelia and Nick lived next door.
The moment Andrew rang the doorbell, Ophelia perked up, and soon enough, the air was filled with the sounds of a heated argument.
I opened the door to find Andrew drenched, looking utterly miserable.
When he saw me, he managed to suppress his anger, forcing a smile. “I brought you breakfast.”
I glanced at the sandwich in his hand. “Did Amelia eat?”
Andrew sighed, “I know I messed up. Amelia’s surgery is over, and now there’s nothing standing in our way. Can you forgive me?”
His words were earnest, but I couldn’t shake the memory of Amelia kissing him without a hint of hesitation yesterday.
What used to be his charming qualities now felt like sheer shamelessness.
“You’ll forgive me; it’s just a matter of time as long as I’m sincere,” Andrew continued, striding into the living room. “Come on, eat before it gets cold.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “Are you planning to throw me another wedding?”
He looked at me as if he was certain I’d eventually back down.
His expression was smug, almost as if saying, “You’re easy to handle.”
“Are you inviting the same people from your wedding with Amelia?” I pressed, watching his face darken.
“Andrew, you’re so full of yourself. We’ve broken up, get it?”
He stared at me, disbelief etched on his face.
Even though Andrew was the one who pursued me, he always held the reins in our relationship.
I might have appeared strong–willed, but I was clueless when it came to love.
I had given in to him more than I cared to admit.
Andrew tightened his grip on my hand. “I don’t agree to this breakup. Stop saying things in anger. Evelina, please don’t be mad.”
Just then, Ophelia glanced at her phone, her expression turning serious as she yanked me away from Andrew. “Come with me, my brother is about to jump.”
We rushed to the rooftop, Andrew trailing behind us.
The building stood over thirty stories high.
Nick was perched on the edge of the railing, looking precariously close to falling.
“Nick, come down! Let’s talk this through!” Ophelia urged, her voice laced with panic.
Ignoring her, Nick turned to me. “I need to talk to Evie.”
I froze for a moment.
Evie was the name only Nick had called me since childhood.
This little kid who once consulted me about majors in college had now grown up so much.
I stepped closer, my voice softening. “Just sit down and talk to me, okay?”
His ears flushed crimson as he spoke in a stiff tone, “I’ve had a crush on you for eight years.”
Each word fell from his lips like a rehearsed line, and my heart raced at the unexpected confession.
