“Test it again! This has to be a mistake!” he roared, his voice filled with desperate denial.
His hands shook violently as he clutched the report, unwilling to accept the crushing reality before him.
“Captain, we’ve already run the test multiple times. It’s her- it’s your wife,” the officer confirmed quietly, his words piercing Marcus‘ s heart like needles.
At that moment, Madeline walked into the station, overhearing the heartbreaking conversation. Her face turned ghostly pale, and she covered her mouth, unable to stop her tears.
“No, it can’t be Caroline – it just can’t! You must have made a mistake!” Madeline‘ s sobs echoed through the station, her legs trembling as though they

could no longer support her weight.
Several officers rushed to her side, trying to
comfort her.
I hovered above them, watching Madeline’s performance with cold detachment.
Her tears and sobs seemed so fake and laughable to me.
What a waste – she could‘ ve been an actress, I thought bitterly.
Madeline, supported by the officers, made her way over to Marcus. She tried to embrace him, to comfort him, but Marcus pushed her away.

“It’s my fault. I killed her,” he whispered, his voice laced with guilt and regret.
Yes, I had a chance to survive. If only he had come to find me then, maybe everything would’ve turned out differently.
But he had pushed me into the abyss himself.
I thought back to that third day of my abduction when the kidnapper decided to play a twisted game with me.
“Right now, your husband is with another. woman. If you call him and he’s willing to come over immediately, I’ll let you go,”
he said.
In that moment, I had dared to hope.

The call connected, and just as I was about to speak, Marcus cut me off with, “If you want to come back, do it yourself. Don’t expect me to pick you up.”
He hung up right after.
In that moment, I heard the sound of my heart shattering.
I knew then- 1 had been sentenced to
death, by his own hand.
