Marcus instructed one of the officers to secretly monitor Madeline at the hospital, emphasizing the need for utmost caution to avoid alerting her.
He knew this investigation had to be carried out with extreme care
no loose
ends.
Marcus, along with a small team,
immediately headed to Madeline‘ s home. His mind was filled with questions and unease. His instincts told him that there was something hidden in that luxurious two–story house.
Madeline‘ s home was spacious and lavish, but to Marcus, it now felt like a potential crime scene that needed to be meticulously searched.
He ordered the officers to comb through every corner, leaving no stone unturned.
After an exhaustive search, they found

nothing of significant value. Marcus began to doubt his judgment. Could he have been wrong?
His intuition, however, insisted that something important had been missed.
He closed his eyes, trying to recall anything from his past encounters with the house, hoping for a clue.
Suddenly, a flash of insight struck him. He opened his eyes and quickly walked to the doghouse in the yard.
Staring at the empty doghouse, Marcus was certain it served more than just its obvious
purpose.
He crouched down and began searching thoroughly. Sure enough, in a corner, he
found a hidden switch.
When he pressed the switch, the floor of the doghouse slowly moved aside, revealing a secret passage leading to an underground room.

Marcus led the officers down into the
hidden chamber.
In the center of the room hung two human skins – an utterly horrific sight.
One of the officers, less seasoned,
immediately collapsed to his knees, trembling in fear.
Another officer pointed at one of the skins and stammered, “Isn‘ t
that…Madeline?”
Marcus stared at the two skins, an overwhelming mix of rage and sorrow surging through him. He recognized them instantly – one was Caroline, and the other was Madeline.
The realization hit him like a freight train: the body from three years ago had been Madeline‘ s, which meant the Madeline who had been by his side all this time was an impostor.
Marcus felt as though he had stumbled into a vast and twisted conspiracy, one where

everything around him was shrouded in lies and deception.
I floated above them, watching the scene unfold, shocked beyond words.
The real Madeline had been dead all along, and I had been replaced by someone
wearing her face.
What a bitter irony.
Marcus recalled the moment when
“Madeline” had appeared by his side as a forensic pathologist, exactly three years ago.
A sharp pain stabbed at his heart. It was from that moment that everything had gone awry.
He had noticed nothing. How laughable.
A bitter laugh escaped his lips, but soon it turned into sobs.
Because of someone who wasn‘ t even Madeline, he had lost Caroline.

Unable to bear the weight of his guilt, Marcus doubled over, vomiting as his body tried to expel the emotional agony that consumed him.
Watching Marcus suffer filled me with a deep sadness.
