sure what to
“Where are we going?” Ruby asked as he led them to the car. Scott had barely even looked at him, and he wasn’t su say to his brother either. He had failed him as an older brother, and he hadn’t even realised it.
“What’s going to make you feel better?” He asked Scott, at a loss of better things to say.
Scott looked up, his eyes red. “Honestly, Alex… this might sound stupid, but I’d give anything to just egg the hell out of his house, however juvenile that might be.”
Alex barked out a laugh and nodded. Very well. He was planning on doing much worse than that, but it was not a bad start.
“Convenience store first, then. He said.
Ruby and Scott were both quiet as they followed along, and he couldn’t help but smile as it took him back to when they were younger and both Ruby and Scott used to follow him around like this. He thought it was annoying back then, but he wouldn’t change anything if he had another chance. It wasn’t until he was parked in front of Marcus’s house that Scott began to panic.
“Alex,” he called, sounding anxious as he stepped out of the car. Maybe this isn’t such a good idea after all”
Alex smiled at his little brother, eggs in his hand. “This guy is about to find out what happens when you mess wi
with a Blackwood. Besides, you’ll feel better after this. No matter how much of a bad idea it is, you said so yourself.
He handed Scott an egg and he stared at it. “You aren’t mad?” he asked. “You’re not disappointed in me?”
Alex frowned at him and wrapped his arm around his shoulder, involuntarily sending a burst of fresh tears to his eyes. “Scott, you’ve done nothing to be ashamed of. You’d never disappoint me. If anything. I’m the one that has disappointed you. And I’m truly sorry.”
His brother burst into tears and his heart broke when he swiped at his tears angrily, clearly hating that he was unable to stay in control of his emotions today. As if Alex would suddenly look down on him for being emotional after everything he had been through today, when he was usually so stoic.
“I know everything that’s going on is a lot, and I’d be just as upset Hell, I’d be crying too if I were you.”
Scott nodded and hugged him, and he held him tightly. Ruby looked at him with such relief in her eyes and he shook his head, sighing. How long had she been keeping Scott’s secret? How hard must it have been for her to keep quiet every time he questioned her about her relationship with his brother?
“Come on,” he murmured. Scott nodded and pulled himself together, straightening his clothes. He gasped when Alex reached back and threw one of the eggs with as much force as he could, and a burst of laughter escaped his lips when it cracked against Marcus’s pristine window.
Alex handed him a couple of eggs of his own and leaned back against his car as he threw them, his mood improving with every egg that smashes against the house, until at last, he was finally laughing. He cast a glance at Ruby, overwhelmed with guilt. The things he had said to her… he had hurt her, and he did it knowingly. He had been ignoring her, avoiding her, and all the while, she had just been taking care of his family better than he was. He saw the pain in her eyes when he had compared her to Natalie, when he told her that even Natalie was more loyal than she would ever be. He had sat there and watched her brother insult her, and he hadn’t even tried to stand up for her. He had watched in silence and let it happen because of his misguided anger.
He walked up to her, hesitating, Ruby looked at him in a way that had his heart working overtime. There was no anger in her eyes, no judgment, no vindication. Instead, she smiled at him reassuringly, knowingly. He raised his arm to wrap it around her and exhaled in relief when she walked into his embrace. She had every right to be mad at him for being as harsh with hef as he had been, when she so clearly didn’t do anything wrong. Instead, all he saw in her eyes was relief. Her focus wasn’t on being right, it was on Scott and his well–being. He leaned in and pressed a kiss to his wife’s cheek, startling her.
Thank you,” he whispered. “For taking care of him in my stead

She smiled at him, a look of understanding in her eyes. He was so lost in his wife’s eyes that he didn’t even notice Marcus walk out of the house until he was dangerously close to them
He straightened and intercepted him before Marcus could reach either his wife or brother. The victorious look in the man’s eyes irritated him, and he drew back his arm before punching him in the jaw as hard as he could. He stumbled backward and fell onto the floor, ass first. Alex shook his head and dusted off his fist, irritated that he had to get it dirty in the first place. Marcus burst out laughing, the sound hysterical, and held his phone up. “I’d be careful if I were you. Your brother has secrets. Secrets that I can easily reveal with the touch of a button
He smiled at Marcus on the floor and nodded. “Go ahead,” he told him..
Marcus’s smile wavered for a second, but then he grinned widely. “Don’t think I won’t.”
He crossed his arms over each other as Marcus picked himself up off the floor. “How about you show me what you’ve got on him
dn
Scott walked to him and placed his hand on his arm. He could feel his brother trembling, and it sent fresh rage through his body. By the time he was done with Marcus, no one would recognize him. Marcus clicked on his phone, his smug smile slowly transforming into disbelief.
“It doesn’t work? Your phone is fried, huh? What a coincidence, he said, his tone threatening.
Marcus laughed, the sound hysterical and almost crazy. “I have Backups. I’m not stupid,” he said, just as three black cars pulled up at the curb.
“Yeah. So do I. Alex told him.
Blake and the rest of the security team stepped out of the cars, guns strapped to their waists. Standing there in their black suits, even he had to admit they looked intimidating as hell.
“Boss,” Blake said, and he tipped his head towards Marcus’s front door.
“He says he’s got backups of something I want destroyed, so I guess we have no choice. Destroy every single thing in that house and bring me every single piece of electronics he owns–but smash it to pieces first.”
Marcus charged toward him, but his men had him restrained within seconds. He glanced at Scott and sighed. “That’s who you fell for? Seriously!”
Scon looked distraught, and he regretted teasing him immediately. He wrapped his arm around him and sighed. “Everything will be okay, kiddo,” he said to him. “But we need to work on your taste in men. Ruby seems to have recently developed good taste. She can give you some pointers.”
Scott laughed and he breathed a sigh of relief.
“This motherfucker managed to call the police before Elliot fried his shit.”
He sighed and pulled out his phone, hating that he now had to ask for a favor. He managed to get the Director General of the Police on the line just as the police car parked in front of them. Two agents stepped out of the ear, their guns drawn, their eyes on the men that were restraining Marcus.
“Afternoon, officers,” he said, nodding.
They pointed their guns at him, and he sighed. “Terrible idea,” he muttered. “Could you please tell me your name, rank, and station?
Both of them blinked, startled for just a second. They knew as well as he did that they had to provide him with the information he had asked for, and they did it grudgingly.
“Cot all that?” He asked the Director General on the phone

“Got it.” he repeated on the other end of the phone. “But you ove me, Alex.”
He gritted his teeth. “I know,” he said, ending the call.
He glanced at Marcus with renewed hatred before turning back to the police officers in front of him.
“Now, I’m going to need you to let this man go, one of them said, his voice calm, his gun aimed directly at Alex. He had to admire the officer’s temperament. They had outnumbered themat least five to one, but it didn’t seem to faze the poor
officer.
“I’m afraid I be doing no such thing.” he said to the officer, feeling somewhat bad for him.
Scott was clutching his sleeve while Ruby’s hand trembled in his. He hated that he had put them in this situation. This wasn’t something either of them should have had to experience, and it was entirely on him. He was the one that brought them here. He should’ve known to come alone.
“I regret to inform you,” he told the officer, glancing at his watch that in less than a minute your receiver will inform you to
stand back.”
He glanced at the device strapped to his waist and laughed. When the officer looked back at Alex, it was clear that he thought he was dealing with a psycho of some sort. He wouldn’t be entirely wrong though.
He grabbed his receiver and raised it to his lips to ask for backup, and Alex couldn’t even blame the guy. Unfortunately for him, his device crackled just as he was about to speak. “Stand down. Leave the premises at once,”
Alex could just about make out the voice, instantly recognizing it as the Director General’s voice. Both the officers looked shocked and took a step back to request more information, their voices low, but eventually he saw their shoulders sag. They looked at him, and the annoyance in their eyes was justified. He bet they had become police officers because they wanted to make the world a better and safer place, only to come to the realization that none of it mattered–this world was ruled by money. It always has been.
“Very well, Mr. Blackwood,” one of them said. He glanced back at Marcus and then sighed. He shook his head as he walked back to his car, his colleague in tow.
“How?” Scott asked, his eyes filled with admiration that Alex hadn’t seen in years. He smiled at him and ruffled his hair. “Connections, Scott,” he murmured. Scott didn’t need to know just how dirty he could get his hands for their family.
Ruby dropped her head on his shoulder and he wrapped his arm around her.
“Let’s go home,” he said.
Ruby and Scott both nodded. They looked exhausted, and he wasn’t even surprised.
“Take care of him,” he ordered his men. “Make sure he doesn’t tak.”
Scott looked back at Marcus one more time, his eyes red. Then he turned resolutely, renewed confidence in his eyes. He looked up at Alex gratefully, and Alex smiled at him as he opened the door for him.
Marcus was going to regret messing with his brother.
