Chapter 6
Archer called several times to hurry me up before I finally set off for home with Paige.
After another exhausting day, we arrived home.
To my surprise, Archer was actually at home.
The sky had darkened.
The living room was dim, the lights off.
Archer sat on the sofa.
I turned on the lights.
“Daddy…”

It was Paige.
It had been quite a while since she last saw
Archer.
Paige hesitated, unsure whether to approach
him.
In her world, Archer was a rare presence.
Thus, Paige felt both unfamiliar and apprehensive towards this father.
I patted Paige’s shoulder and told her to go to
her room.
The living room was filled with the stench of smoke, which was harmful to her health.
Paige obeyed and went to her room.

I walked through a sea of cigarette butts to the window and opened it.
The cold wind that rushed in made me shiver.
With November arriving, the weather was gradually turning colder.
I could feel my health deteriorating.
“Don’t smoke at home anymore.”
I dislike the smell of smoke, and so does Paige.
Archer used to have no smoking habits.
He would only smoke when he was
exceptionally stressed, and always away from
- me.

He never let me smell a trace of it.
Archer remained silent and extinguished the
cigarette in his hand.
“Oh, by the way…”
I turned around and pulled the printed divorce agreement from my bag.
“Sign this.”
Seeing the cover with the large word “Divorce,”
Archer threw the agreement onto the table.
“Gwen, have you lost your mind!”
“I’m exhausted from dealing with things. outside. Can’t you just be quiet for a moment!”

I watched Archer’s furious reaction with calm.
I knew why he was angry.
After more than a decade together, I understood him perfectly.
He thought I couldn’t live without him.
But now I was leaving him.
Leaving forever.
I regretted it.
I suddenly realized how much time I had wasted
on Archer.
I should have walked away the moment things

started to go awry.
Ignoring him, I walked past Archer to head to
Paige’s room to settle her down.
Archer grabbed my hand.
“Explain yourself!”
“You…”
His touch was rough and uncomfortable.
He looked at Gwen, now much thinner and different from his memory.
Her once–round face had become gaunt.
Her complexion was poor.

She looked…
Like she was ill.
I shook off Archer’s grip and sat on the sofa.
“Sign it, and let’s part ways amicably.”
“Paige stays with me, the house is yours, and the assets will be divided 60/40.”
These brief statements were the final resolution of our twelve years together.
Seeing Archer’s incredulous expression, I found it somewhat amusing.
“Gwen, are you insane?!”
“I’m not signing this. Take it away, and I’ll

pretend I never saw it.”
“Can’t we just go back to how things were before, and live our lives well?”
Seeing that I remained silent, Archer softened
his tone and tried to embrace me.
“Gwen, I know we’ve been arguing a lot lately.”
“I promise it won’t happen again.”
“I’ll make time to be with you and Paige.”
I looked at him in silence.
In the end, the topic of divorce remained unresolved.
I didn’t want to continue arguing with Archer.

Even one more word with him seemed like a
waste of time.
If he refused to sign, it didn’t matter; I would pursue legal proceedings.
The days returned to their quiet routine.
As if the previous arguments had never
occurred.
Archer started coming home more frequently.
He would occasionally bring flowers to the
house:
But it was of no consequence to me now.
Perhaps in the past, I might have been pleased

to see those flowers.
But now,
I felt nothing.
