Chapter 8
I never expected that this person, always so carefree and bold in front of me, would suddenly break into tears.
“Oh no, darling, you mustn’t cry. When you cry, it breaks my heart.”
“If you must cry, save it for later.”
Kamila shot me a glance, brushed past me to set her suitcase down, then grabbed my hand, pulling me toward the hospital.
“Come on, we’re going to the hospital!”
“If they can’t treat you here, we’ll go to Beijing. If Beijing can’t help, we’ll head abroad…”

I stopped Kamila, shaking my head.
“I just came back from the hospital. I can’t stand
the smell there; I really don’t like it.”
“I hate taking medicine, and I despise
needles…”
Seeing Kamila about to cry again, I hurriedly dragged her inside.
“Let’s not talk about this anymore. You haven’t seen Paige in ages, have you? That little girl talks about missing her auntie every day.”
“Once she’s home from school, you two…”
Kamila interrupted, “What about Archer?”

The smile on my face froze. “I’m planning to divorce him. He doesn’t know yet.”
But even if he did, what could he do? He’s no
miracle worker. He can’t cure me.
Kamila didn’t press further. Just then, the nanny returned with Paige, breaking the tense atmosphere.
Watching them play so happily, my heart felt a pang of sadness.
If only time could stop at this moment.
After putting Paige to bed, Kamila and I sat in the living room on the couch.
Kamila cracked open a can of beer, took a deep swig, and asked what my plans were.

I shook my head.
I knew my body wouldn’t hold out until the day I officially divorced Archer.
Besides, once I’m gone, Paige will be with Archer anyway.
I didn’t want things to get too bitter between us.
Kamila was silent for a while before she pulled out her phone and started tapping away.
“You always said you wanted to see the
grasslands, right? Well, I’ve bought the tickets. We leave tomorrow.”
“We’re taking Paige. The three of us.”

I was surprised Kamila would spring this on me, but then again, it was so like her.
And since I was already nearing death, why not?
We quickly agreed to the plan.
As the plane took off, I still felt a bit dizzy, disoriented.
It was Paige’s first time on a plane.
She wasn’t scared at all, her eyes wide with curiosity as she gazed out the window.
The next few days went smoothly.
They were the happiest, freest days I’d had in
years.

We played during the day, and when we were tired, we went back to the hotel to rest.
Life was indeed much more carefree.
“Tell me about you and Archer,” Kamila said, lying beside me, setting the scene for a late–night heart–to–heart.
I sighed.
After more than a decade with Archer, I didn’t even know where to begin.
I told her about Archer and Ruby.
Kamila was nearly livid, ready to appear in front of Archer and slap him across the face.
Her reaction made me laugh, so hard that tears

came to my eyes.
“In a way, I understand him,” I said.
“Ruby… do you remember the first time we worked a part–time job during college, at that cosmetics company?”
“You mean…?” Kamila’s sharp mind clicked instantly.
“Damn it, Archer really hit the jackpot, didn’t he? We shouldn’t even call him Archer anymore, let’s just call him Sir Opportunist.”
I laughed again. Kamila’s words were as sharp
as ever.
Archer and I had built our company in the beauty industry.

Ruby’s family happened to be giants in that
field.
If I were him, I’d be torn too.
On one hand, a wife of over a decade. On the other, a golden opportunity to rise overnight.
Neither choice would be wrong.
It’s just that, unfortunately for me, I ended up as the wife in this story.
