Chapter 5
On the day Olivia returned to the country, Alexander didn’t come home all night.
I called him, but his phone was off.
Maybe he was caught up with an urgent work
issue.
I told myself this to excuse him, but it was just self–deception.
If the company were facing a primary crisis needing the president’s intervention, would he really be avoiding me like this?
I didn’t dare to think further, not wanting to imagine the worst.

“Ding.”
A WeChat friend request notification popped up on my phone, and on a whim I accepted it.
Afterwards, the other person said nothing, as if it were only natural for me to know her.
I clicked into their Moments and my mind went
blank for a second.
【It’s so glad to see you as soon as I return home, I’m really happy!)
In the photo, the hands on the steering wheel were unmistakably Alexander’s.
With a grain of salt, I alighted upon, that the watch he wore today was one I had carefully

chosen for him.
I examined the photo repeatedly, zooming in and out, finally fixating on his left hand.
The ring finger that used to bear his wedding ring was now bare, with only a faint ring mark.
I collapsed onto the sofa, sitting there numbly
until dawn.
When Alexander at dawn came home, I stared at him blankly.
He looked surprised for a second before quickly looking away, offering a light explanation: “There was something at the company yesterday. I couldn’t get away.”
“If there was something at the company, then

why is Olivia here too?” I blurted out.
Alexander’s hand paused mid–drink, his tone both harsh and impatient: “She just returned to homeland. Can’t old friends meet up? You’re being unreasonable!”
Without another word, he stormed out.
After that unpleasant encounter, we went through a period of cold war.
Perhaps used to compromising, I decided to mend our relationship actively and brought lunch to Alexander’s office.
The receptionist knew me as the president’s wife and let me through without delay.
When I reached, the secretary’s staff hurriedly

emerged, with their faces tense, so evidently that I couldn’t turn a blind eye.
Ignoring them as usual as I pretended, I pushed open the door.
Inside, Alexander was patiently peeling shrimp while Olivia sat in his chair, resting her chin on her hand, beaming and chatting with him.
The intimate atmosphere between them made
me feel like an outsider, like a malicious third party breaking up a couple.
I stared at Alexander’s hands, smeared with red oil, suddenly feeling a surge of acid in my stomach and an involuntary wave of nausea.
“What… what are you doing here?”

Alexander didn’t lift his gaze, asking
indifferently.
“If she can come, why can’t I?”
