Chapter 7
Sarah insisted that I be admitted to the hospital. She spent a fortune to hire the best doctors for me, but it was already too late. My illness was in its final stage, and there was no hope for a cure. The treatments only prolonged my life for a while longer.
Sarah put her entire life on hold to care for me. She cooked nourishing soups, told me stories, and wheeled me outside for fresh air. She did everything she could, but my body continued to deteriorate at a frightening pace.
I barely recognized the gaunt figure staring back at me in the mirror.
I hired a lawyer and made my will, leaving

everything to Sarah. When she found out, she was furious.
“You really thought everything through, didn’t you? Already writing a will! Are you so sure you don’t have much time left?”
Her voice was raw with anger, her face contorted with emotion.
I managed a weak smile.
“Don’t… don’t be mad. I just want… want to settle things in advance.”
Seeing me so frail that even speaking left me gasping for breath, Sarah turned away and broke down in tears. She cried for a long time before finally calming down.

“Kimberly, promise me you won’t give up! Even if it’s just for me, keep fighting, okay?”
Her tear–streaked face looked at me with such desperation.
“Okay.”
I nodded.
I wanted more time with Sarah too.
“By the way, Kimberly, Ryan has been asking about you non–stop. Should I tell him what’s going on?”
Her question left me silent for a long moment before I shook my head.
“No. Let’s leave it.”

Ryan, Brian, Sarah, and I had all been close friends in college. I didn’t want Ryan to see me like this. I was content with Sarah by my side for
now.
But life doesn’t always go as planned.
Ryan flew all the way here and showed up at Sarah’s doorstep. Left with no choice, Sarah brought him to the hospital.
“Kimberly… what happened to you…?”
Ryan stood frozen at the sight of me, disbelief
written all over his face.
I smiled at him.
“What’s wrong? Do I look so bad you can’t

recognize me?”
“No… you look the same as always,” he said, though his eyes were wet with unshed tears.
“You still look beautiful.” His voice cracked as he tried to hold back his emotions.
“Ryan, did you come all this way just to see us?” I asked, trying to change the subject.
Ryan paused, then shook his head.
“No, not really. I just missed you guys.”
I stayed quiet, watching him. He sighed and eventually told me the truth..

changed my number and flown abroad. Unable to contact me, he turned to Brian, only to catch him in an intimate moment with Patricia at the office.
Ryan had punched Brian, leaving him black and blue, and severed their friendship. Afterward, he tried everything to reach me but failed. In the end, he had to come to Sarah for answers.
“You two really kept me in the dark! Am I not your friend too?” Ryan grumbled as he handed me an apple he had peeled.
He left the room to make some phone calls, returning a while later with news.
“Kimberly, I’ve found the top specialist for lymphoma treatment! We’ll fly back home tomorrow.””

He turned to Sarah, giving her instructions.
“I’ll book the tickets. You get everything packed.”
“Got it!” Sarah nodded without a moment’s hesitation.
Neither of them asked for my opinion.
Fine. Let them do what they want.
As long as they’re with me, it doesn’t matter where we go.
I smiled at the two of them, feeling that life like this wasn’t so bad after all.
But my luck had never been good.
