Chapter 2
By the time Asher got home, it was already late at night.
He switched on the lights and was startled to find me sitting on the sofa. With a laugh, he loosened his tie and asked, “Why didn’t you turn on the lights?”
I looked at his face, memories flooding back, hesitating over whether to bring them up. We had been married for years; from our youthful days in school to the altar, I had devoted so much of my life to this man…
After a few seconds, I quietly said, “Asher, let’s get a divorce.”

For a moment, his expression shifted to impatience as he questioned, “What are you going on about now?”
“I said divorce!” I stood up, unnervingly calm. “I ask when you’ll be home, where you’re traveling for work, who you’re meeting at these gatherings. If that’s considered being irrational, then I’ve been mad for a long time!”
Perhaps my emotions had been too intense, as Asher appeared genuinely taken aback, a flicker of guilt in his eyes.
“Sorry, Ellie. I’ve been so busy lately that I didn’t notice how you felt.”
He gently pulled me close, but his tone felt somewhat dismissive. “Please stop it. Can we talk about this later? Just give me some time.”

“I’m not making a scene.
I pulled away from him, my hollow gaze fixed on his. “You know I’m not the type to say things like this lightly.”
We had promised each other that no matter how heated our arguments got, we wouldn’t use threats of separation, especially not the heavy word ‘divorce.”
Asher seemed to realize I wasn’t just throwing a tantrum. He regarded me with a scrutinizing gaze that made my heart ache. The contrast between the sincere, passionate boy I once knew and the man before me was stark.

doesn’t look good.”
“The passion fades eventually; you’ll always be my most important family and friend, right?”
The words left me incredulous, and my mind went blank. “Family and friend? Would you care if your family or friends had partners? If I’m family to you, then what if I went and found a new boyfriend?”
I never believed the notion that love transforms into familial affection after years of marriage; it was merely an excuse for infidelity.
Asher was clearly irritated by my analogy, rubbing his forehead in frustration. “You’re just twisting my words. When did you become like this?”

At that moment, his phone rang abruptly.
After hanging up, he glanced at me, as if about to say something, but the phone rang persistently again.
“What is it?”
His tone was so harsh that it momentarily stunned the caller, before a soft, tearful voice broke through.
It was Julia, sobbing as she spoke, “What should I do, Mr, Sandoval? The client suddenly wants to back out of this huge deal. I can’t handle it alone, and I don’t know what I did to offend them.”
“Stop crying. I’ll be back at the office right away.”

Asher grabbed his suit jacket and walked straight out without even looking at me.
Through the sound of the door slamming shut, I heard him trying to reassure her. “It’s not that big of a deal; it’s just one contract. It’s not worth crying over.”
