The room fell into a chilling silence once more, and I suddenly felt a lump in my throat, tears betraying me as they slipped down my cheeks. I stood up to gather my things from the bedroom and called the driver to take me to another
apartment.
It was a place I had bought before our marriage. When we were tying the knot, I had intended to put Asher’s name on the deed too, but he took my hand earnestly and said, “Ellie, life is too long; I don’t want to test human nature. I can’t guarantee anything, but just want to make sure you have a safety net.”

I wonder if the sixteen–year–old Asher would see the man he is today as a stranger.
The apartment was impeccably clean. I wearily tossed my luggage onto the living room floor and called my assistant to book a flight to an island.
With late–stage cancer, treatment no longer held much hope; spending more money would only prolong my life. I’d rather savor the remaining time I had!
I also called my lawyer to draft a divorce agreement. The call came quickly, her voice filled with surprise. “You want a divorce?”

“This should be within your professional. purview,” I joked lightly.
She sensed that I wasn’t just acting out of anger, and her good manners kept her curiosity in check. “Are you going to fight it out in court? What about the division of assets…”
“A peaceful divorce would certainly be preferable.”
I absentmindedly took down all the embarrassing photos in the apartment while casually saying, “If it comes to a lawsuit, I’ll take whatever I can get; I’m not about to let anyone else benefit.”

After all, Asher’s current success is undoubtedly tied to my support, and I hold a significant stake in the company. With no family of my own, once I’m gone, all this property will belong to Asher. I’d rather donate everything than let Julia profit from it.
The lawyer worked efficiently and arrived the next day with a draft of the agreement for my review. As I flipped through the divorce papers, my phone suddenly chimed.
Julia had sent a photo but quickly retracted it, leaving behind a message:
“Sorry, Mrs. Sandoval, I sent that by mistake. I meant to post it on my social media.”

“Please don’t argue with Mr. Sandoval on my account; there’s really nothing between us. He seems a bit unhappy today.”
I nearly laughed in disbelief at her shamelessness.
“Sorry, I didn’t save your number. Who are you?”
There was a long pause of twenty minutes before she finally responded, the typing indicator flashing continuously. I shook my head–this girl was still too naïve; it was amusing how easily she got riled up.

“Mr. Sandoval brought me to your special place today. I really envy you for having such a wonderful man.”
The picture showed Julia in our school uniform, sweetly nestled in Asher’s arms.
