“Kelly, what brought you here today? How can you have time to come here?”
Before Kelly could answer, she was pulled inside by Ken. “It’s freezing cold outside. Come in and let’s talk.”
She barely had time to sit down before he handed her a steaming cup of tea.
“Ken…” Kelly hesitated. “I came here to tell you that… maybe we should avoid seeing each other from now on.
Hearing this, Ken froze. He did not look up but his body did not move at all. Then he asked slowly, “Why?”

wounded expression. “Kelly, don’t you want to date me?”
Caught off guard by his directness, Kelly flailed her hands in protest. “No, it’s not that! It’s just…. On New Year’s Eve, I overheard you saying you already have someone you like. I’m afraid these rumors will cause misunderstandings for you and her.”
She let out a bitter laugh. “You see, back in the compound, people used to say the same thing about me and George. The rumors made me start imagining things. that weren’t there. In the end, it just caused trouble.”
At the mention of George, Ken’s eyes filled with a mix of pity and frustration. Yet, he understood her way of thinking. So, he quickly composed himself and interrupted her, “My kindness toward you. has nothing to do with George.”
Kelly was confused, “Then what ….”

Before she could finish, Ken grabbed her hand tightly and said seriously, “Kelly, the person I’ve liked all along is you. So, let’s get married,”
Kelly’s heart was in a panic as the words sank in. She had never thought Ken would like her. He was the epitome of perfection in their social circle. His parents held positions as high as General Palmer’s and his own achievements had made him the object of admiration for countless women.
Yet today, he was sitting here before her and earnestly confessing his love for her over the years!
“Kelly, I’ve liked you since we were young. It’s just back then, George was always by your side and you only had eyes for him. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t find a way into your heart.”
He continued, “I’ve been hurt,
frustrated, even furious. There were times I wanted to punch George, every time I saw him making you suffer.”

Kelly was dumbfounded. It was at the moment the fragments of her past pieced together. She remembered waking up after fainting and noticing that George had a bruised face.
Ken gave a wry smile. “I thought since you two liked each other, I had no right to interfere, even though I love you. That‘ s why I agreed to join the satellite research base.”
“However, fate has a strange sense of humor.” He said again, “Just as I was trying to move on, George got entangled with Amanda and I found myself meeting you again at the base.”
“Kelly, this time, I don’t want to let you go. Will you marry me?” he stated.
Kelly was in a daze. She did not expect that the person Ken held dear in his heart was her. As she was stunned in place trying to process everything, Ken took out a stack of papers and a red brocade box from a drawer and placed them before her.
