The following day, Kelly found herself growing more comfortable around Ken. He truly was someone reliable, someone she could trust. More importantly, with both of them stationed at the satellite research base, they could look out for each other.
Eventually, with tears brimming in her eyes, Kelly nodded, “Ken, I agree.”
Back in the compound, the family members were bustling with preparations for George’s upcoming wedding.
“Happy Wedding Day” banners were plastered on every doorway and bright red lanterns were hung high in the ceiling.
Yet, amidst the festive atmosphere, George remained sullen all the time. Seeing his gloomy expression, one of the family members teased, “George, you‘ re about to marry a beautiful bride. Why the long
face?”

To outsiders, George seemed to have it all. He got a wife from the art troupe with stunning looks and impeccable manners. Yet only he knew the truth, that the person he truly wanted to marry with was nowhere to be found.
In the past, every New Year’s Eve, Kelly would give him an embroidered handkerchief that she personally made. She said it was his personal keepsake and gift.
This year, however, there was no
handkerchief, no Kelly.
Unable to bear it, George knocked on his father’s door.
“Dad, are you sure you don’t know. where Kelly is? You‘ ve always been close to her. Even if she’s at the base, she would’ve written to you,” he inquired.
General Palmer set down his pen and looked up with a sigh. He looked helplessly at him. “George, you‘ re about to get

married. Is it really appropriate to be so concerned about Kelly?”
George clenched his fists, his face darkened in anger. “Dad, I was a fool before, but now I see everything clearly. I don’t love Amanda. The person I truly love is Kelly. Whatever happens, I have to find her. I just need to know she’s not suffering and that she’s doing well at the base.”
General Palmer took a long drag from his cigarette. Then he said, “You don’t need to worry. That boy from the Murdock Family is at the base too. With him taking care of Kelly, I’m at ease.”
George’s brows furrowed a bit when he heard his father’s words.
While he and Ken were best friends and they talked about everything, no amount of friendship could ease the worry in his heart before he saw her with his own eves.

guy. How would he know how to take care of a girl?” said George
General Palmer’s expression grew more complicated and he eventually waved George away with a vague excuse.
In truth, he had received letters from Kelly. In those letters, she not only updated him about her life but also mentioned the fact that she got engaged.
If George found out about the upcoming wedding, there was no telling what he
would do.
Later that afternoon, Amanda paraded in front of George in her brand–new wedding
dress.
“George, which do you think looks better, this red cheongsam or a Western–style
dress?”
When George turned around to look at her,
he froze.

coyly adjusted her hair and a shy smile attached to her lips. “George, why are you staring at me like that? Do I look beautiful?”
She did not expect that when he opened his mouth, his words pierced her heart, “If it is Kelly who wears that dress, she will be the most beautiful bride in the world.”
As soon as the words left his lips, Amanda’s smile vanished.
“George, what is that supposed to mean?” she demanded. ““The person who is marrying you is me. It’s me, Amanda! Why do you keep bringing up Kelly in front of me?”
George’s smile disappeared as well. His expression turned distant and cold.
Amanda pressed on. She was unwilling to let the matter drop. “George, the wedding date is set. When are you finally going to get our marriage certificate?”
