Ariana instinctively stood up, reaching for the paper in Victor’s hand. But Victor, holding a wine glass in one hand, had already turned around and sat on the couch. He casually flipped through her paper.
With her limited mobility, Arlana would have to approach Victor directly to retrieve her work. In the end, she simply sat down on the couch and ignored him.
Victor, however, seemed to be genuinely engrossed in her essay. The corners of his lips occasionally curled into a
faint smile.
Seeing his amused expression, Ariana felt increasingly certain that Victor was mocking her lack of insight.
She said, “I just scribbled down my ideas. Is it really that funny?”
“Who coached you on the essay? Your professor?” Victor asked, a trace of curiosity in his tone as he looked at
Ariana.
“No one. I just came up with it on my own. It’s totally random!” Ariana replied hastily, feeling a bit flustered under his scrutiny.
Unable to sit still, she got up and approached Victor, intending to
Snatch the paper back.
Victor made no effort to stop her. He allowed her to snatch her economic analysis paper from his hands.
He remarked, “It’s actually pretty well–written. If you submit this as your thesis, I think you’ll graduate without a problem.”
“Really? Have you studied at Glea College or something?”
“No.”
“How can you promise I’d graduate?”
Ariana knew Victor hadn’t been to college. She casually folded the paper and stuffed it into her pocket. “Glea College students are all children of entrepreneurs, magnates, or even politicians. Their perspective is leagues ahead of mine. This paper of mine would just embarrass me if I submitted it.”
“Is that what you really think?” Victor asked, looking at her thoughtfully.
“Shouldn’t I? Everything I said is the truth.”
Victor had been about to tell her that she had no idea how smart she actually was. But a smile flickered across his face at her complete lack of confidence.
He said, “I’ve read your paper–it’s full of thorough analysis and countless technical terms. It shows that you have your own reasoning about economics. It’s a fresh perspective in academia. That’s why I said you should submit it as your thesis.”
“Really?” Ariana looked at him skeptically. “Are you messing with me? After all, you didn’t even go to college.”
She instantly regretted her words. Most powerful and influential people hated it when others pointed out their shortcomings, and she assumed Victor would be no exception.
But Victor seemed unbothered.
He replied casually, “You’re right, I didn’t go to college. But those who did are working for me. Education is important, but intelligence is even more important. Even though I didn’t go to college, those highly educated

graduates belong to my company. Does that make sense to you?”
“Are you bragging about yourself?” Ariana said, unconvinced.
She had never thought of herself as particularly smart. Growing up, her dad never had high expectations of her. He didn’t even care if she went to college, as long as she lived a happy, carefree life.
That was why she never took her studies seriously. Even her acceptance into Glea College felt, to her, like a favor her dad had pulled strings for.
