Mom came out, “Mike! Thanks for this! You
should stay for dinner!”
“Sounds great, I’ve been looking forward to
your fish.”
His name was Mike Young. A nearby innkeeper.
Last year, my mom got shocked when she was
changing a lightbulb at the inn. He had brought her to the hospital.

“When did this happen?! Why didn’t you tell
me?!” I said.
Mom looked embarrassed, “It wasn’t a big deal.
You’re busy.”
Guilt washed over me, “I’m not leaving,” I said
later, during dinner.
Mom was excited. “What about work, your
boyfriend?”
Mark? He’d be fine.
I was going to be hung up on this forever, but it
had only been two days. He probably wouldn’t
care.
He probably didn’t even know where I was.
I had a dream about snow falling from the
trees. I slept better than I had in a while.
I started working the front desk. Usually, I’d be
in the chair reading.
Until one guest showed up.
