Hugo was taken aback. Evalina, once so soft–spoken and compliant, now had the guts to stare him down. Her skin was even paler than Olive’s, and she was way too thin.
He was into her at first because her eyes reminded him of Olives But now, with that fierce look, her eyes were nothing like Olive’s.
Hugo locked eyes with her. “You’re gonna regret pulling this stunt on me,” he warned.

Evalina just gavé a half–smile and wondered, ‘Regret? The one thing I truly regret is marrying him out of blind love. Nothing else matters now.‘
Hugo walked out without a backward glance. Evalina tried to hop in his car, but he shot back, “I said I’d go shopping with you, not chauffeur you around.”
Watching his car door shut, Evalina turned and hailed a cab. Thank goodness her fever had broken; otherwise, she wouldn’t have made it to the mall.
He strode ahead while Evalina followed, watching his back. It was ironic–after years of marriage and her treating him so well, he showed more emotion in the past few days talking about divorce than ever before. She let out a bitter chuckle.
As she saw him glance back at her and head straight to the counter, Evalina casually picked items from the counter, not caring about the prices, and just bought whatever.
“I’ll take this,” she said. “Bring out your priciest item,” she told them. “Wrap it up, he’s footing the bill.”
Before long, Hugo’s driver was loaded down with bags. And Hugo’s face grew darker, like a storm cloud about to burst.
But Evalina felt a strange satisfaction, like the sadness from the miscarriage was slowly fading, bit by bit, thanks to his anger.
“I never knew you had such a shopping bug,” Hugo mocked, a vein bulging on his forehead as he watched Evalina head into another upscale store.
Evalina didn’t hold back, making another big purchase with a wave of her hand. “Since we’re calling it quits soon, and once I’m not with you anymore, I might never get to splurge like this again. Gotta make the most of it, Mr. Hayes,” she said.
“What did you just call me?” he snapped.
“Mr. Hayes, right? Or should I call you my dear ex–hubby now?” she retorted, her tone dripping with sarcasm, making anyone who heard it feel uneasy. Almost like they forgot the days she used to call him “honey” all sweet and obedient.
Just as he was about to lose his cool, his phone buzzed. He glanced at it, his face turning serious. Evalina could tell without him saying a word–it was Olive.
“Go ahead and pick up,” Evalina said, keeping her tone even. “I won’t say anything to upset Olive.”
Hugo shot her a glare, but he answered. “Hey, Olive,” he said, his voice all gentle–like, not at all how he talked to Evalina.
Evalina rolled her eyes, feeling a mix of irritation and amusement, and looked away. She didn’t want to hear their conversation.
“Hugo, where are you? The Hayes family found out I’m pregnan. They just came to find me and wanted me to go to their place. What should I do? I’m scared to go… Will they hurt my baby?” Olive’s voice was shaky and scared.

Hugo’s eyes turned cold as he looked at Evalina. ‘Is it her? She just threatened me, and now the Hayes family knows about Olive.’
Evalina raised an eyebrow at his look. “Why are you staring at me like that?”
Hugo hung up and started walking towards Evalina, his steps heavy. “Did you tell the Hayes family about Olive? Evalina… you’re really pushing it.”
Evalina’s heart skipped a beat. ‘How did the Hayes family find out? And why now?‘
