Chapter II

“It wasn’t me,” Evalina said, her brow furrowed.
But Hugo’s gaze turned even colder. “If it wasn’t you, then who was it? Did you forget what you said today?”
“I…” Evalina started.

“I didn’t think you could be so ruthless, Evalina. If anything happens to Olive and the baby, you’ll be the one to blame!” Hugo sneered, turning to leave.
Evalina watched him walk away, a bitter smile on her face. He didn’t even give her a chance to explain, just assumed it was her. But then, she knew he thought even less of her now. She followed after him.
This time, he didn’t brush her off. Instead, he grabbed her wrist, his grip tight. “You’ll explain to the Hayes family when we get there.”
Evalina yanked her hand free, her eyes flashing.
Evalina walked in, and right away, Hugo’s sister Yvonne’s snide comment hit her ears. “Well, well, if it isn’t our long–lost Evalina. Thought you forgot how to get home there for a sec. And look over there; the other lady’s got the nerve to show up pregnant.”
Seeing Evalina’s sour face, Yvonne leaned in closer, a nasty grin on her face as she glanced at Evalina’s stomach. “Guess you should blame yourself there. Three years with Hugo and still no baby. What’s the point of keeping you around?”
Evalina knew the family never really liked her since she joined them. But for Hugo’s sake, she always held her tongue and tried to keep the peace.
However, this time seeing Yvonne’s smirk, Evalina just gave a cold snort. “It ain’t just up to me. Your brother’s been trying for three years and still no dice.”
“What did you just say?” Yvonne was shocked. Evalina, who usually took her lumps without a peep, was actually talking back.
Evalina kept walking inside, not even looking back. It took Yvonne a second to catch up. “Evalina, get your butt back here! What are you saying? Hugo’s got issues? Olive is already expecting!”
Evalina turned around. “Yeah, three years with me and no baby. But Olive comes back and boom, she’s pregnant. Maybe you guys should look into that. Who knows if that’s someone else’s kill or not? But if your family’s cool with raising other folks‘ kids, that’s on you.”
Hugo walked in just as Evalina finished talking, and his face turned dark as a thundercloud,
“Hugo, did you hear this? Is Evalina losing it? Seriously, listen to her!” Yvonne pointed at Evalina, her eyes wide with disbelief.
“If you don’t want a piece of my mind, shut it,” Hugo said, dropping Yvonne’s hand. Yvonne, who used to be the spoiled brat no one could control, was no match for Evalina now. This was a whole new ball game,
Yvonne opened her mouth to argue, but one look at Hugo’s angry face and she clamped it shut. I’ve never seen him this mad–not even when he found out Olive has left Clusia. What’s going on here?‘ she wondered.

Chapter 11
Hugo finally caught up to Evalina, who was walking briskly ahead. Just as he was about to grab her and demand answers, he heard Olive’s tearful voice from inside.
Olive cried, “Mrs. Julie Hayes, I know I was wrong. Hugo is married now, and I shouldn’t have come back. It’s all my fault. If Ms. O’Donnell is angry, she should blame me, not Hugo.”
Hugo’s face darkened even more.
