Evalina’s eyes flickered. ‘Olive sure knows how to twist things. Isn’t she just making it sound like I’m the one who caused all this trouble?‘
“Good to hear that,” Julie, Hugo’s grandma, snapped. “We only accept Evalina as Hugo’s wife. We won’t let some homewrecker ruin the Hayes name. Well, you’re pregnant, huh? Please deal with it yourself.”
Hugo turned and shot Evalina a fierce glare, cutting Julie off mid–sentence. “Grandma!”
As soon as Olive saw Hugo, she stumbled forward, looking terrified, and fell into his arms.
Hugo carefully shielded Olive behind him and glared at Julie, who was fuming. He said, “She can’t lose this baby–her health is fragile. If she loses it, she won’t be able to have children again. This baby must be safe.
“And Evalina has already agreed to the divorce. We’ve been together for three years, but we’re just not compatible, right, Evalina?”
His eyes, full of threat, turned to Evalina. It was clear he was saying, “Don’t you dare disagree.”
Evalina let out a bitter laugh inside, noticing the contemptuous and mocking looks from the Hayes family. She had always been the lowest in the Hayes family, and now she was probably their laughingstock.
She smiled, “Yes, Hugo said he’d give me a 15 million settlement for a peaceful divorce. It’s compensation for my lost years and to ensure I won’t reveal that Ms. Anderson was the other woman, protecting the Hayes family’s reputation. I’ve agreed, haven’t I, Hugo?”
Evalina’s friendly yet naive smile met Hugo’s grim face, her eyes full of sincerity. But that only made Hugo angrier.
He thought, ‘She’s got the nerve to add an extra 5 million to the settlement? I’ve only agreed to 10 million, not 15 million. Is she forcing me to agree to the higher amount? Otherwise, she’ll cause a scene here? What a greedy woman.’
Still, looking at Olive, he gritted his teeth and said, “Yes, that’s what we’ve talked about.”
Evalina smiled, satisfied. ‘How touching! For Olive, he’s willing to spend 15 million just like that. I’ve been married into the Hayes family for three years and haven’t even spent more than million.
Julie couldn’t believe her eyes. “Evalina, you’ve been around here for three years. You couldn’t hold onto your man, and now some other chick swooped in. And you’re just gonna hand him over for a measly 15 million?”
Evalina rolled her eyes and sneered in her mind, ‘Hugo’s the one who messed up, but I’m the one getting blamed?‘”
But she faked a smile and said, “Julie, 15 million might be pocket change for your family, but it’s a big deal to me. But you know what? Give me 20 million, and I’ll stay in this marriage, come hell or high water.”
Hugo’s face turned beet red. “Evalina!” he growled. “You think our marriage is just a cash grab? What the hell do you think I
am?
Julie looked at Evalina like she was seeing her for the first time. You… you…” She was at a loss for words, her eyes wide with
astonishment.
“Come with me. Hugo grabbed Evalina’s arm and yanked her towards the door.
No, Hugo Olive watched Hugo storm out with Evalina, her jaw dropping.
