Lydia covered her mouth, looking at Evalina like she was some sad homeless girl. “Everybody at school knows the story. You really think she’s still that pure little angel she used to be? Jason told the tale himself. It’s all true.”
Jason Smith, the campus heartthrob with the money and the looks, was once the talk of the town with Evalina. They were the dream couple, and everyone knew they had a thing.
Lydia saw Evalina’s face drop at the mention of Jason’s name and went in for the kill. “Jason can’t believe he fell for someone like you. You just left him for some old sugar daddy. What’s the diff between you and a gold digger, huh?”
“You…” Vanessa was so mad that she could barely see straight, wanting to march right over and shut Lydia up for good.
But Evalina just gave a cool, distant smile. Lydia’s little speech helped her put the pieces together. Yeah, she and Jason had a thing, but they never made it official before graduation. Afterward, Evalina went and married Hugo, and that was the end of that.
Then Evalina looked right at Lydia and let out a little laugh that said it all. “Lydia, if you had a thing for Jason, you should’ve just said so.
“All those clothes, all those gifts, they came from me. It’s just a guy. If you were really into him, I could’ve stepped aside. No need to stab me in the back to get him to like you better.”
Used to be, Lydia was flat broke. Evalina was the one always digging in her pockets to cover Lydia’s school bills.
Evalina had no idea she was dealing with such a snake in the grass. Now the O’Donnell family was down on their luck, and Lydia was the first to stab them in the back.
Lydia’s face fell when she heard that. She got all red in the face, pointed at Evalina like she was mad as hell, and shouted, “Enough with the act! You just wanna throw my past poverty in my face, don’t you? I get it.
“You used me as your little charity case to show off your so–called kindness. Now that I’ve got some dough, you’re all jealous, right? Evalina, nobody’s more full of it than you.”
Vanessa cut in, rolling her eyes, “Well, getting rich off a man, and you think that’s something to brag about?”
Lydia held her head high and sneered, “At least I ain’t marrying some old geezer just for his money like Evalina did. You’ve heard the rumors flying around, right?
“And look at you now, all down and out. It’s like the old guy got tired of you after a few dates and kicked you to the curb.”
Then she called over to the waitress, “Hey, I’m gonna load 30 grand on the card here.”
The waitress’s eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. “Really? You’re such a doll, ma’am.”
“But first, I want you to toss this woman out,” Lydia said, acting all high and mighty as she pointed at Evalina. “She’s been messed around by some creepy old guy, and I don’t want that kind of trash around here.”
Evalina, who’d seen her fair share of people’s true colors since the O’Donnell family went under, just let out a cold laugh. “What a joke. If my ‘leftovers‘ are so gross to you, then you should dump Jason too, ‘cause I was the one who ended things with him.”
Lydia sputtered, “You… Do you really think you’re good enough for Jason now? The very thought of you makes him wanna puke. You have no idea how powerful his family has become in Havenbay.”

She continued with a sneer, “And get this, Jason’s about to partner up with them. The Hayes family is a top–tier elite clan that you’ll never even get close to in a million years.”
Evalina was taken aback for a second. ‘The Hayes family? What are the odds?‘
