“Relax; I ain’t gonna croak before we’re divorced. I don’t wanna die as a Hayes. If I do check out, I’ll be long gone from you to avoid any bad juju,” Evalina sneered.
Hugo’s brows shot up. His usually cool mug got all clouded with anger. He thought, ‘That’s a new one. I’ve never seen her talk back like this. And her words are so dang sharp!‘
He shot back, “So, Evalina, this is your real deal? All those years of acting so sweet and gentle, you really put on quite the show, huh?”
Evalina gave a weak smile. “Think about it. I gave up my career and my skills, jumped right into his family mess after grad school, and played the perfect wife. But check this out; what did get in return?‘

“You just realizing this now?” Evalina chuckled coldly, her eyes, once so bright, now full of mockery, “Just look at how proud you are of yourself when you get outta bed. My acting skills must be top–notch, right?”
“You…” Getting what she was getting at, Hugo’s face turned cold and stern.
Seeing his usually smooth face all hardened up, Evalina felt a weird sense of satisfaction–a mix of sadness and relief.
He sneered, “Evalina, I really misjudged you.”
“Since we’re heading for divorce, no more pretending. Get those divorce papers ready. I don’t wanna hit any snags that drag out the process,” she just replied.
The hospital insists on my husband’s signature, and maybe being divorced means I’m off the hook, right?‘ Evalina thought to herself.
“Hold up. You’re suddenly so gung–ho about divorcing? What’s your angle here?” Hugo sensed something fishy and grabbed her collar, forcing her to look him in the eye.
Evalina wrinkled her nose. This smell… It’s not the cologne I got him. Is it Olive’s?‘
She pushed his hand away, her voice laced with disgust. “Look, I just want to get this divorce over with. I don’t need you holding me back from moving on.”
Hugo’s eyes darkened. “You’re already planning your next move huh? Or have you already got someone in mind? Eager to get cozy with them?”
Evalina snorted a laugh. “You, with a kid, got the nerve to lecture ne on fidelity? Mr. Hayes, are you suddenly interested ‘cause you heard some gossip? You’re into those loose types, like your sweetheart.”
His voice turned cold. “Don’t you dare speak of Olive that way.”
In a flash, his hand was around her neck. Evalina’s breath hitched She’d never seen him this pissed before. His usually cool gaze was now a storm of rage.
Evalina had heard the whispers. Olive was his first love, his childhood crush. Now she got it–all his mood swings around her were really about Olive.
Evalina just rolled her eyes inwardly. ‘He’ll probably be unfazed ven if I’m strangled now.”
